I thought it was going to be the same essential game, until I saw the developers talking about it, and they said (something like) "Just because It's called 'Bioshock', that doesn't mean it will have anything to do in any way with the previous games' technology or storyline."

That sold me on the idea. Because I really really liked Bioshock, because it was new. Bioshock 2 (which I'm still playing through) just seems like the same game, because it basically is (In the sense of universe, tech, characters, etc).

So I'm glad they're changing it up.

I'm curious about what the political overtones might be. I loved how they wrote the first Bioshock story. It was more philosophical than political, and they treated all characters and ideas involved fairly, I thought. Looking at the images from this game, there is obviously a lot of red, white and blue flying around, which might lead one to believe that the overtones might be critical of America, which would be a shame. Not out of any sense of nationalism on my part, but only because its been done to death and I think they could do better.

The time period and propaganda throw a lot of possibilities in the mix, though, including the early 20th century progressive movement that highlighted some less than moral dalliances with eugenics (hence the "Do Not Burden Columbia with your Chaff" poster).

That would very much fall in line with the philosophical plot themes established in the first Bioshock, and avoid any terribly overt political statements (aside from the obvious immigration debates that continue).
