Nintendo must lower the price.

Re: DS available for preorder at $199
strictly my opinon~~
$199.99 is way too much for the DS and a handheld as mediocre as it. The DS only delivers gaming, and a dual screen with voice and touch commands.....I comply.. $125-150 would be their safest bet.
I predict the SONY PSP launching at around $200, because of the USB 2.0, Camera, Movie Functions, Memory Stick (INCLUDED HOPEFULLY!), Music Functions, and lastly... a crisp detailed gaming screen with crisp games...
but yeah... good for sony, but the DS is NOT worth $199....it's a gaming handheld... and the PSP is an EnTERAINMENT handheld.... which DESERVES the price... lol

Re: DS available for preorder at $199
I just don't get how anybody is speculating $200 for the PSP. If they do that Sony's going to be losing money for every unit sold unless they make it up in games (like the PS2 and Xbox were doing at the beginning of their life cycle - people were buying DVD's and stuff). And with a media machine like the PSP I'm concerned that gaming isn't going to be the first thing on everybody's minds. Maybe Sony has a few safeguards against this. But from the specs I'm familiar with, anything under $250 seems underpriced if Sony wants to cover their collective asses.

Re: DS available for preorder at $199
would depend on sonys plan. and 200 MIGHT not be loosing money or all that much. we just dont know.
but i dont think sony would want to make it too much more then that if they want ppl really interested.

You got a thing against the DS don't you?
You always seem to put it down when you post in regards to it, but maybe it's just something I'm picking up, who knows.
How do you figure the DS is mediocore? I mean I'm sure you probably got tons of hands-on with it, correct?
Anyhow, on the subject at hand.
My best guess is that EB and GameStop wanted people to pre-order it, after all the positive buzz it got at e3. So they figured at most it would cost 200 bucks, this way if Nintendo announce it at 200 bucks, they are safe, if they lower it, they just drop the price, but if it was announced at 250 and they had it for 200, they would technically be forced to credit all the people who pre-ordered it at 200.
So I think the 200 is just a safety net, my guess is the DS will probably be around 130-150 bucks, as to not directly compete with the GBA or Cube as the case may be in price.

Re: DS available for preorder at $199
I'm wondering....
How is the DS not the next gameboy? How is Nintendo expecting to have a DS and another Gameboy at the same time? Unless the gba stays around forever. Doesn't make sense to me. The DS isn't a substantial 'third pillar'. It's a gameboy with 2 screens. As a consumer I won't buy two new handhelds from the same company.

I've been pondering this myself the whole time.
How is this not GameBoy DS or Nitro or whatever.
I mean it would be one thing, if it followed it's own little thing, but then they went and made it backward compatible with the GameBoy?
I really do wonder sometimes.

I highly resent your comment about my feelings about the DS. I've been doing nothing but doing fair comparisons when it came to comparing the two systems. The two handhelds shouldn't even be compared, because obviously the DS is for gaming and the PSP is for entertainment.
But my argument in the matter is that DS is a handheld for gaming purposes, and if they price it at $200 at launch then go back to when the Playstation first came out at $200.... the DS is no Playstation.........So your probably right about the safety net, it'll go down, but I'm just saying.. $200 is way too much for a gaming handheld.
Whilst Sony goes a little higher in price for the other features such as Movies, Music etc.
And I think SONY WOULD be safe going for $200 because not only can they make up for it in game sales, but they can make up for it in UMD sales. People can't play DVD's on it, they'll buy the UMD's out for the PSP.......... SUCH as........ ADVENT CHILDREN.....own4g3!

Re: DS available for preorder at $199
Dude, who cares?
And youre right, the DS is no Playstation, its more of an N64 kind of system.
To most people, the PSP will be a gaming console instead of anything else, and most of the people getting it will be like 18-34. I really dont see kids playing the PSP because of their parents not letting them get it for them. I also see a huge price difference on both the DS and PSP. Im thinking around $300 for the PSP and $150-ish for the DS.
And sure there maybe some UMD's for the PSP but I dont think a lot of people will even pay attention to them.

You can resent my comment all you want, I made it, and I pretty much still stand by it.
You say you try your best to compare the two, then in the very next sentence you claim they shouldn't be compared. That is special.
I think 200 bucks is too much for a gaming handheld, but then again we don't know the final price now do we. And for the record, I think it's too much for any type of portable device. I've seen way too many portable devices stolen/lost/misplaced to spend that much money on anything portable.
You say Sony can afford to lose money on the PSP, because they can make up with it on sales for games, movies and music. Now quite honestly, how many people do you think will folk over extra money to buy something on a UMD just to play it on a PSP?
Ok assume, that there is a great backing by companies to use UMD, which I highly doubt, how many people will rebuy movies they own on DVD or WHS for a UMD just to play on a PSP? Heck, I got 4 DVD players and I'm still edgy on buying DVDs of VHSes I own.
And will a UMD movie offer all the bonuses of a normal DVD?
I think you are giving the PSP atleast in that case too much of a benefit of doubt, but you never know.
