lol... you captured the essense of the problem.
Fan support is more important than making money in the end. Nintendo is lucky to have fans who are pretty much slaves to them... if Nitnendo's fans were as loyal to Nintendo as Nintendo is to them Nintendo would be dead.
Nintendo isn't #1 right now, so they are gonna have to take a financial hit to get back up there. I just don't see this happening. They will most likely stay cheap and slowly but surly Nintendo's home consoles will die off. GBA will meet it's match one day too, with it's lack of innovation and extremely cheap hardware it's a matter of time until Nintendo will have to invest more into it to survive.
It's pretty sad when I think about it... they are dying a slow and painful death. By the time they are willing to give up and join with other companies they may not be worth that much.
