Kill Bill Vol. 1 Questions
**Spoiler Warning**
Ok, so I have these friends who think it's hilarious that when she goes to talk the to Hanzo Hattori in the bar about making a sword that when he asks her "Do you know any Japanese" and she says "A little, like "Domo Arigato"" They think it's a reference to the song "Mr. Roboto"
Me and another friend think they're being dumb, and this is just a common japanese phrase because yeah it means thank you. So what do you guys think?
Also near the end at the final fight scene with O-Ren Ishii when there is a old Japanese water pump going the same people also think Tarantino was being funny by adding that. When I think it was there because he was trying to be like Kurasawa (Or however it's spelled.)
Comments, Opinions?!
AHH!

Re: Kill Bill Vol. 1 Questions
It's both... I think... Yes it means Thank You (or just domo means thank you... or just arigato means thank you, or something I forget how it goes), but it's also a reference to the song... As a joke... Like "LOOK AT ME I CAN SPEAK JAPANESE HAHA DOMO ARIGATO LMAOZ!!!" tehehe chuckle chuckle...
And I dunno who or what kurasawa is...

Re: Kill Bill Vol. 1 Questions
Domo Aragoto means "Thank you very much" or "Thanks alot" ( when translated, i think)
I think he was trying to make it "real". IF you went to Japan, and some Japanese guy asked you if you could speak Japanese, you would say "Domo Aragoto"...because technically, that is speaking Japanese.
And i have no idea why the water pump is there.....not one friggin clue. It didnt make me laugh...

domo is "a lot, or much" arigatou is "thank you"
and yea, i took it as being all "Look at me i can speak japanese haha OMGOMGOMG LMAOZ LOLZ!!!!1one!!!" also.
kurasawa is like this famous asian director guy(z?) who i don't know much about.
IE: "Like Kurasawa i make mad films,
okay, i don't make films,
but if I did they'd have a samurai." -barenaked ladies' "one week"

Kurasawa is the Director of "Seven Samurai"
I don't think it's a reference because she also says Konnichiwa.
But oh well.

Oh well if she said Konnichiwa then I doubt it was a reference... It's been a long time since I saw the movie, I guess she was just saying various easy, well known Japanese word deals...

Re: Kill Bill Vol. 1 Questions
and if you wanna b really polite it's "domo arigato gozaimasu".
At least she could pronounce the words properly, unlike Beyonce in Austin Powers 3 @.@

I say the "domo arigato" was both a refernce and was said because that's one of the most common japanese phrases heard.(IMO at least). not sure about the waterpump, though.

Re: Kill Bill Vol. 1 Questions
If you ever play a MMORPG, like FFXI, almost every single player in the game knows domo arigato gozaimasu and various other japanese words and phrases, like kudasai and a few others I don't remember right now. These are common words, but also quite basic. English players memorize them to help speak with Japanese players, likewise the Japanese players will memorize "thank you. welcome. hello. please." etc. So in the movie, she's pretty much just displaying a basic knowledge of the language, nothing more.
