Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
I want to smash my PC
Since I have internet, it's been terrible.
I have a virus in a dll file that doesn't exist. C:\windows\system32\logpk.dll
When I try to delete it manually (McAfee can't delete it), it's just not there. I tried to show hidden items, no worky.
I searched the internet and found that it can be a file that's PLACED there by a virus. They reccomended scanning in safe mode. That's what I did, but I couldn't find any virusses.
Another problem I have is that my PC won't run any CDs anymore..... at first it recognises the CD, when I start the game (WC3, SC), it doesn't respond or can't find the CD.
It's also too slow. But there's around 93 system memory available.
The last problem is that internet explorer ain't working. I've been using firefox, but for my webmail I prefer explorer (FF is all messed up there, doesn't open mail in new windows...)
I'm ready for your hammer now.

Reformat it. That might be your best bet.

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
I'm using a legal version of XP, what about the key-code that I already used once?? Or does the XP CD have a special feature where it recycles it?
I don't have the XP CD here btw.

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
Umm is it XP pro? XP home you can use the key on your PC about 3 times. XP pro it doesnt really matter how many times you use the key.

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
If the key's been used 3 times, just call MS and tell them you need to install it again because of a virus.

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
1- my friend, its time you stop using kazaa. i told you before you get viruses off that network. dont install that pos anymore!
2- it doesnt matter if its xp home or xp pro. you can install it as many times as you need. when i used Xp Home on my other computer, i reformated it at least 5 to 8 times. i have Pro now and same deal. i reformat all the time. not for viruses or anything. just cuz i like a clean start sometimes.

BTW thanks for the help.

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
be careful of what you save when you have viruses. mp3's i just put on my ipod :P i used to throw them over the network onto another computer. it would take like 30 cd's for me to save them on CD

Partition, Partition, Partition (magic 8)
The virus you said is in your Windows, system32 folder. The problem with these is that it has registry keys, and reinstalls even after cleaning it, and the registry. It has a bunch of dummy files where it rebuilds from. So reformat is the best way to do it. Since the file is in Windows, reformat just the partition of your system. If you don't have more than one partition, or don't have enough space, get a program like Partitionmagic and do that before reinstall

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
Well I have 4 partitions, 1 for windos & software, 1 for MP3s, 1 for games and one is empty, wanted to use it for back-ups.
So I can just format the C:\ partition? Should I do the games too, because of the registration things??
My dad once wanted to format 1 partition but accidentily did everything. Will that be a problem, or was he just being stupid?

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
you should format everything thats expendable. everythings easily replaceable. keep your game saves, but format the games them selves cuz they're easily reinstalled.
When you run the XP cd and goto the install. it has you select a partition, you just select C: tell it to delete, then tell it to install windows on the unpartitioned space.

Re: Can I borrow your sledgehammer?
viruses can still hop over onto the new hard drive. if you got a virus problem i'd always recommend reformating before putting the new hard drive in.
