I hate to say it, N5 will be backwards compatible
From EGM:
Quote:
"Holy hot tamales - have you seen the new Legend of Zelda for GameCube yet? This baby looks good enough for the next wave of consoles. I can assure you it ain't but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't play the game on Nintendo's future system. That's right, dudes and dudettes; I've gotten wind that the company's next console will also run GameCube software. Remember that you read it here first..."

Bad choice. Very bad choice. Here's why:
Storage medium
The mini-discs are cool and all, but it's about time they take a dump. Sure you can make a disc that size with a larger storage medium, but you can also take an already existing storage medium (like HD-DVDs) and it'll be cheaper, since it's massed produced. On top of that, no DVD playback again? Fine with me, it's not DVDs I think they should add, but HD-DVD support. High licensing costs for a technology that hasn't been adopted, I agree. If I were Nintendo, I'd include a HD-DVD lens that's backwards compatible, allowing developers to put games on regular DVDs, but they don't hesitate to use more room and put it on an HD-DVD. More importantly, it allows Nintendo to include DVD playback, and in a few years, when HD-DVD begins to start popping out, you can sell an upgrade which include the licensing costs (like Xbox's DVD kit). Now your 2-3 year old system is playing the latest and greatest technology has to offer. Plus, some people love custom soundtracks. The option is always nice.
Saved games
I'd rather not see the same memory cards used, not because of the cards themselves, but because I hate the way the games are saved. I like what Microsoft did, where all the files for the game were grouped together. This way I don't see 30 different files for the same game. I have a memory card full of Monkey Ball replays, and it makes up a million files. I have a ****load of Crazy Taxi 3 replays too, and it's all one file and nicely organized. As for the storage, I'd like to see an easily removable HD, like one where you can slide it in from the back. That way when your system breaks, you can keep the saved games. I am also praying for small memory card slots, like SD cards. Something hidden and out of the way.
Universal Settings
Anyone who plays games on a widescreen HDTV with 5.1 setup can come to love Xbox's universal settings. With Gamecube, I need to go into each game and select 16:9, select progressive scan, and select Dolby. With Xbox, it knows I use 16:9, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and I have Dolby Digital and DTS. I just turn on the game and go. And on a side note, I'm against forcing developers to do things, but if next generation someone like Microsoft forced developers to have 16:9 support, I would be all for it.

Re: I hate to say it, N5 will be backwards compatible
Hmmm! Don't know. I really don't hope they choose the same format either. It was fairly good for this generation but next generation it will be outdated. How fast can those HD DVD read? I don't supose they'll even be behind on speed when compared to the ODs. But for all we know it could be that their next drive may also be able to read them or something. And even though EGM may have a good reputation on the rumors dept. I like to keep them as that until they are confirmed. Just my two cents

Re: I hate to say it, N5 will be backwards compatible
I'd have to check, but I believe HD-DVDs can read faster than DVDs. But then again, HD-DVDs are generally going to be transferring larger amounts of data. But look at Xbox, the load times for that aren't bad at all.

Re: I hate to say it, N5 will be backwards compatible
have to wait and see on this one. Nintendo has a lot of things that need to change and we'll see how they can do it.
They can still change memory type and have SOMEWHAT of a differnt format for the games. maybe full size optical discs where the drive can still read the old small ones.
but we'll see what they can pull out. the controller needs a pretty decent change to it and that might be the spot that hurts them the most. PS2's controller i doubt will change. but nintendo's really needs to a bit. no so much the feel but the button layout needs to be altered.
have to see what nintendo can pull out. Either way i wont be getting it, but it'll be interesting to see what they can do. IMO, they can change things that need to be and still keep backwards compatable.

Exactly what I was thinking. I mean, my CD rom drive can read mini CD roms. I wouldnt see why N5 couldnt work in the same way.

Re: I hate to say it, N5 will be backwards compatible
Exactly what I was thinking. Nearly every CD/DVD Rom drive has that smaller notch for miniature versions of the discs. Who says Nintendo is staying mini. I think they are gonna go with a format that is about the same size as blu ray discs because they need to keep up with size comparisons otherwise companies will stay away or make little video clips in games look crap compared to other consoles.
And they don't have to go with the same memory card format. They can have some kind of converter and could put your saves on another format that Nintendo will probably support (something like SD cards, etc...) and then just copy files to it and play Gamecube games on it.
And who knows what Nintendo is doing next gen with their console. They are gonna learn from the things the other companies did this gen. and fix what they didn't do. Since this is the first console that doesn't have Yamauchi, the man who doesn't think there isn't competition, Iwata will hopefully listen to the industry and not try and go too far in one direction but still keep that Nintendo look/feel.

Ditto.
But...what about my GBA games???
I wonder if the N5 will have the ability to play the Nintendo DS games.

Re: I hate to say it, N5 will be backwards compatible
It will at least for GBA. Hell, Nintendo would release an add-on that allows you to play DS games on your TV...only problem would be how to incorporate it without having a touchscreen handy

nintendo did say they were working on the new gamecube system, and depending on how the DS does, they would change the N5 to match it's revolutionary features. praise god for the backward compatibility. Best.Decision.Evar!

I don't think that the memory system has to be a problem. They could just euh... make a converter that converts your game data. Or transportation from the GCN to the N5, via the DS.

Re: I hate to say it, N5 will be backwards compatible
Well I do hope they change to control to suit a larger variety of games. The GC controller is comfortable and all but it doesn't work that well for a number of games.
Oh maybe they can a screen ( similar to the DC) attached to or placed in the controller that allows you to view maps and select items something like the touch screen on the DS?
