Great technology or weapon of mass destruction?
We have been talking about ecological stuff in my sociology class and my teacher told us about this US government project, HAARP, that is potentially extremely harmful to the earth. I thought it was interesting because they (the Pentagon) say that it is a great communication device while the environmentalists like to point out that it is potentially a weapon because it subjects the earth to direct sun rays by blasting holes in the ionosphere.
Here's their website:

It's another night in hell, Another child won't live to tell
Can you imagine what it's like to starve to death
And as we sit free and well, Another soldier has to yell
Tell my wife and children I love them in his last breath
C'mon now amen, amen, amen

Why is it that all technology is just killing people or our planet nowadays?

Ninjas in space? Wah!
That's interesting, btw. I've never heard of the project. If it's harmful to the environment, they better stop it. Sheesh.

Re: Great technology or weapon of mass destruction?
My personal favorite is the moon, but I would be more interested in creating my own space colony...more fun that way.

Re: Great technology or weapon of mass destruction?
I've known about HAARP for about 10 years now. It's not a WMD, in that it doesn't target things, but I suppose that kind of thing (punching holes in the ionisphere) could cause a lot of damage to the environment, but I don't think you can accurately predict where that damage is going to go.
I used to have a ton of great info on this thing but I lost it awhile ago. My general opinon of it is that it's not a good thing, although I'm sure one of our resident neocons will be in, in a minute to weigh in on how it's the greatest thing since the neutron bomb.

That's the problem with most of these technologies isn't it? You don't know what the effects on the long therm are.
Genetic manipulation, cell phone radiation....
