Default Computer Problems

Okay here is the deal I'm building a computer for my cousins girlfriend trying to use some of the old parts that i have and some new. Has a new hd but an old 650 athlon processor and old MB. But I keep running into an error when installing win xp pro. Cannot write to read only memory and when I install it on my computer by bypassing my SATA harddrive (which I had to friggin fight with my comp to get it to work) it gives error corrpution in file.. setup.exe. :WTF: anyone can help me I'll give +rep even though it doesn't mean much

Is the XP Pro cd scratched? If it is in even a small area, it could be the reason that its saying setup.exe is corrupt.

If not, then try reformatting the drive, because **** happens on a computer/HD.

Are you able to install at all? Or is it during the install process that it says its corrupt? Because I'm thinking its the CD. Take it to Gamers or whatever and get the CD cleaned.....

Wait a minute, I'm confused. You're bypassing your harddrive? I'm confused.

I hate building computers with half old stuff and half new stuff. All you run into are problems. I've built my share of computers, I know from all too much experience.

I know how it feels. I've done my fair share of mixing old and new. No major problems, but I've had my fair share, heh...

No with the sata you have to hook the main hd in and boot xp from that and then run a copy utility to copy the boot sector over to the serial hd because win xp doesn't read it as a normal hd even if it does have an array

I see. I've never had any experience with SATA. Ok, now I understand. I don't know why you're having problems. I would guess because your HD (not the SATA) is going to crap. I'm kinda just making stuff up though.

Me and Ace (with answer from ominub) got the problem solved. The RAM was bad.
