Blasters?
How far into the future (if ever) do you think it will be before we get:
a) blaster pistols (star wars)
b) transporters (star trek)
c) lightsabers (star wars)
d) interactive holograms (star trek)

Re: Blasters?
a) 50 something years. That will be when they first get officially used though, not yet replacing the bullet.
b) Probably 100 or more.
c) I don't think lightsabers are technically possible... We'd need to find a way to stop the laser first. Besides, they'd be pretty useless as a weaponwithout the Force anyway. It'd be better to stay with blasters (or guns)
d) What do you mean by interactive? I don't watch Star Trek so...

Re: Blasters?
a) Exists allready, just not to the public, i.e. only the US secret military, or NSA if you want to vcall it that, has them.
b) like GM said...allready exists, just not to a Huge scale...
c)Lightsabers are not posible, since light can not be stopped unless it is absorbed by something black. but then that wouldnt really look much like the light saber is supposed to. but theoretically it is posible to make one.
d)that i am not sure of...

Re: Blasters?
1) Blasters - 2060 or more because it would take a lot of research and development to concentrate a group of particles to the point where they can hurt someone
2) Transporters - in the vicinity of 2030 becuase if you think about the theory of it, its not really that complicated, all you do is record the matter in a specific area and then send that digital data to another location where that matter is recreated, the only barrier is recreating the matter from the recorded data, either that or simply moving each particle one by one at a very highspeed and then recompiling them at the destination
3) never....simply because you cannot stop a ray of light
4) 240 or sooner because once you figure out how to make a hologram odds are that by that time an interactive algorythm would have been created. Add forcefields and you have a hologram you can touch, as for the portable transmitter the Doctor has in Voyager, i don't think thats possible

Re: Blasters?
Blasters- 2075, but they will not look like Star Wars ones, but more like the star trek phasers.
Transporters- 2100- for real use on a practical level.
Lightsabers- Never, unless some new technology builds a solid powerful beam of limited length that can be used as a sword.
Holos- 2060

Re: Blasters?
Interesting responses.
I totally agree about the lightsaber issues. Are they possible?? Definately not with the technology we have today, and maybe not ever. Who knows what we will develop in the future though. And would they be practical? Probably not. A weapon like that would only be useful if you had something like the force to guide you.
Transporters would be really wierd. If we had them, wouldn't they totally eliminate the need for cars? And kids would have no legitimate reason for being late to class anymore, Damn!

Re: Blasters?
a) They probably already have these.
b) Out of all these listed, I think transporters are the furthest away from being achieved. It just seems so impossible to teleport humans.
c) Not as impossible to make as you might think...Of course they wouldnt do us any good without jedi powers. Im not sure how they would make one, but I dont think its impossible. The only way they would ever be of any use would be if Mechs are some day invented...
d) I think this is probably in the near future.
