Default I am really, really pissed off with my PS2

My PS2 has been giving me problems for a while now. I got my PS2 near launch, so it's one of the earlier models. I've done nothing wrong with it and treated it perfectly just like all my other game consoles. About 7 months ago I did the whole Lens cleaning method from GameFAQs.com. I opened up my PS2 and wiped the lens with a Q-Tip with a tiny drop of alcohol on it... After I did that, my Kingdom Hearts started working again. One month later, I still took care of my PS2 perfectly and it stopped working again... I didn't really want to do that whole lens cleaning method again since it was really risky and it could have damaged my PS2 instantly. So after it stopped working again, rather than setting my PS2 horizontly, I set it vertically. After that, it was working, but just barely.

And 4 days ago, this is where I really got pissed off. I rented Dark Cloud 2 and after playing for 38 awesome minutes, my PS2 just froze and stopped working. It stopped working after that. I had Dark Cloud 2 rented and this had to happen. Luckily Blockbuster let me get F-Zero GX in exchange the next day. I want to buy a PS2 game right now, but see, I can't! I can't play any of my favorite classic PS1 games because of this... I can't do anything...

Actually, to be honest with you guys, I haven't been able to play PS1 games on my PS2 for almost 2 years now. Even when my PS2 was about 2 months old, I wasn't able to play PS1 games or PS2 demo disk CD's with a purple colored bottom on my PS2...

So you all know I can't:

Can't Play PS1 games
Can't Play Demo disks
Can't Play DVD movies
Can't Play PS2 games
Can't do just about anything except stare at the same damn screen I have seen for over 100 times now... the PS1 Browsing screen where it always would say "Disk Read Error".

So what the hell am I supposed to do here? I don't have enough money, and when I said I want to buy a PS2 game, I am not even 100% sure I will buy it or not. I have 8 PS2 games total and none of them work no matter what angle I put my PS2 as. So what I am trying to say here is that no, I won't buy a new PS2 because I can't possibly afford one... And no, I don't want to open up my PS2 and risk damaging any of the parts... I remember someone (I think Joeiss) who made a thread a while back (I couldn't find it) that mentioned him calling Sony and getting his PS2 repaired for free. Everytime I had problems with Sony hardware, Sony always had to bring in money in the picture when it wasn't even my fault... Do you think I can get my PS2 repaired for free if I call Sony or something like that? This is really annoying, someone please help out. Thanks in advance.

Exact thing happened to me.

It starts gradually breaking down. It won't read this then it won't read that and so on.

Here's what my friend did. He got his dad to go throw a spaz until they replaced it for free. That's what I'm getting my dad to do.

Good luck.

Sorry Dylflon, I missed you there... What do you exactly mean by throw a spaz? Do you mean to argue with them? because everytime I did, it resulted in "Sorry, the only way we can repair your Playstation is by charging a $60 fee plus shipping".

So if I call them right now, what should I say? I haven't done anything worth paying for, I need a free repair or better yet, I want them to exchange my PS2 for a brand new one. Should I call Sony and wait for an operator and tell him/her my story? I am afraid that if I tell them that I opened my PS2 to clean the lens, they'll instantly say it's your fault and we can't give you a free one. But even before I opened it, it wasn't working, but Sony is picky like that, they've done something similar before.

Also, if I do get a brand new free PS2 in exchange, how long do you think it will take?

I don't mean to piss off the Sony guys on the board (see, it's not a Nintendo thread, where I actually do mean to piss off the fans because it's A) quite easy, and B) quite entertaining) but WTF, why can't Sony keep their systems working properly?

I had to return my first psx, and my second one hasn't been exactly perfect either.

Yet, 4 Nintendo systems, and the Xbox, and 0 problems. I don't like the conspiracy theory, but I'm really starting to have trouble believing Sony doesn't purposefully make some of their machines deficient/just doesn't care about the consumer.

I suppose they can afford to but, knowing this, why would you stick with the company.

Heh, not suprised. I knew they would eventually all fail.

All reports of free fixes come from the statement: "My PS2 is giving me disc read errors". Every other way is rare to work, or doesn't work outright. Proven methods.

And yes, the Sony reps are all asses.

I so agree. The game's on Sony consoles are great, but the hardware itself sucks!

Can anyone guess how many times my PS1 has f***ed up?

And to get back on topic... Dyne, are you sure that statement will get me a free repair or maybe even a brand new PS2?

My Ps2 is starting to bug out too I think... every time I turn it on I don't know what the hell it is but... um...

I see a spark inside the system. Is this normal? It's like a little orange spark, it's been doing it for months.

I think I may get a PsX when it comes out... because if I buy another PS2 it would be my 4th.

Well... I've had my PS2 for 2 years now, and not once has it screwed up on me. One of my friends who got a PS2 a few months after me, his PS2 screws up but mine doesn't. I don't know why everyone else has problems with their PS2 and I don't, it's probably just a coincedence (sp).

But, didn't you get a warranty when you bought your system? A lot of stores should offer it.... believe me, especially with the PS2, it's the BEST thing to do. If anything goes wrong you can just get it replaced instantly, no charge.

I can't think of anything else, unless you do what Dylflon's friend's Dad did and scream at them. Don't be afraid to raise your voice, they are payed to take phone calls.

Yes, I got mine fixed for free. I said that it was giving me disc read errors. The Sony rep on the phone was very nice to me, and just took me through some step by step instructions on the PS2's "self check" thing or something. That did not work, so he just asked if I had ever opened up the PS2. I said no, and then he gave me the info to send it to them so they could fix it.

It was free of charge, except for the 10 dollar shipping fee I had to pay. They said it would take 3-4 weeks to get it back.. Hell no! It took them less than one week! I was kind of mad at that because I rented a PS2 on like the 5th day for me to play Madden.. And then I got my PS2 in the mail the next day! hahaha...

And thegame, do you have a network adaptor? Because if you do, whenever you start your PS2 there is like an orange light at the bottom of the PS2 that flickers... yep.

Ok, see, the problem is that I did open my PS2. I didn't mess open it up and mess it up, I opened it and fixed it. So if I tell them I did open it, what should I tell them? I can't lie because the warranty sticker on the back was removed... That means it was expired and removed. So in order to open up my PS2, I had to take out that sticker. So that's proof I opened it. If I tell them I opened it, do you think they'll charge me for it?

PS: I plan to tell them that my PS2 has been giving me many problems even before. I'll say...

"It never played original PS1 games after 3 months of purchase.. (it gave me disk read errors), I wasn't able to play DVD movies, any sort of CD (purple bottomed disk) gave me a disk read error like demo disks, and now my PS2 games don't work. Before they barely worked, but now they always gave me disk read errors. I own about 8 PS2 games and treat the software and hardware perfectly, but I don't understand why my PS2 is doing this. I opened it up to see the problem and blew some of the dust out and closed it back up. The dust wasn't the real problem, but my PS2 is screwed up and won't let me do a thing. It freezes sometimes, it used to take longer to load than other PS2's before when it worked, and it always gave me and still does give me "Disk Read Errors".

Do you think that will work? Should I mention anything else?

All this warranty talk garbage...If Sony would just stop making defective machines, you guys wouldnt have to screw with all that warranty bull****. Another reason I respect Nintendo/Sega so much more. Ive NEVER had a problem with a Nintendo system/controller/perhiprial. And the only problem ive ever had sega-related is one of my Genesis conrollers busted...but my brother threw it down quite hard on my old cement floor in my old basement, so I can understand why it broke. Its actually quite shocking how well Nintendo makes their stuff, and always have.
