Post RPG Ideas

It's always nice to dream a little. And... in the off-chance that a developer stumbles upon this site, signs up to the RPG usergroup, and reads this thread... we may have a voice.

What is your idea of the ultimate RPG? Maybe not even ultimate... just some RPG features, mechanics, leveling systems, character development, group sizes, etc...

Come all you RPG fans, donate your dreams to this thread so that we may experience true role-playing greatness between duration of rare "good" RPGs. With graphics being such an important factor in industry, RPG production appears to be slow for the excellent titles.

I'll probably post my ideas sometime... but let's see someone else get the ball rolling.

Oh god, it would take me a long time to list all my ideas.

What I'd like to see is less of the cliche. The "teenager who falls in love and saves the world from evil" is so annoying, it makes me wanna puke. Let's face it, RPGs arent exactly the most fun games to play in terms of gameplay, so without a good story, why the hell should I sit through 40+ hours taking turns fighting in battles and raising my character's levels? I'd like to see more RPGs like Dark Cloud 2, that are built upon having fun gameplay. A lot of RPGs are too static, and the gameplay is way too cliched. I fail to see how a person who starts off battling bunnies and little slimes thingies can eventually gain enough strength to save the world from unspeakable evil. Like come on, some orphan kid who lives in some piss poor village eventually gains enough strength to fight unstoppable beings?

RPGs are just so unrealistic. Am I being made to believe that I can walk across the entire world in a few minutes, and if I gain enough levels I can eventually become super powered? What I basically want to see in future RPGs are something new and fresh. Something that makes sense. Enough of this raising levels crap, maybe the Japanese haven't figured this out yet, but people do not "level up". Unlimited Saga tried to do something new, and failed miserably. Hopefully someone can get it right.

RPGs aren't necessarily supposed to be realistic.

But anyway...

I would like a real role-playing game where you are a person, in a world. What you do, even small things, completely changes on how the game turns out. You can be something from a knight for the king to a thief to a farmer...if you wanted. And you don't just choose from a list of options before the game begins. Instead, you just work towards it in the game.

If there has to be an evil overlord trying to take over the world, then you should be able to not mess with it if you want, figh him if you want, or join him if you want.

There should be a world that is extremely large. Takes days to get across it on foot. But there would be tons of things to do in between destinations so it wouldn't get too monotonous.

Things like that.

Hmm Don't really know if you noticed but that stuff is all possible with Neverwinter Nights!!!! You could design your own campaign. It is such a wonderful game. No geek should be without it. And I hear the expansion is super good! So go for it!

My ideal RPG would be something fresh and new like DM mentioned. No more of the teenage pretty-boy hero. One main character that in RPGs that I really liked was Geddoe from Suikoden III. He was an adult, and not some stupid teenager who somehow saves the world. I would like to see more characters of his type.

Also, the way you gain more strength should totally be changed. I'm not sure how exactly, it would take some thought. Also, multiple battle systems is also really nice, it adds variety to the game.

And most importantly, an awesome story must be included. The characters and world must suit the story well for the RPG to be an involving experience.

I have a lot of good ideas for online RPGs, but there are too many to name. Besides, thoughts for the perfect RPG need some time, and I'm not going to spend 5 hours thinking of ideas right now.

hmm..

well first of all it is soo true the from zero 2 hero image has been used a few too many thousand times in RPGs.

An idea that i have is something like you already have all these different abilities but you just can't use them yet. Like for example in FFIX Garnet had all the kicka** GFs from the start, you just didn't have NEARLY enough mp to use them now if they left the GF's with her and you slowly got access to them, that would have been much better. As for Ginkasa, you should try the game "Arcanum" it has just about all those gameplay elements.

Here is an idea:

More tactical RPG's.

And I would like to see more games like morrowind and neverwinter nights, only this time I want one thats not just for an Xbox or PC. I really like RPG's that let you interact and have an effect on the world around you. I want a game I can play for years, and still have places to go and things to do. And dont tell me Animal Crossing is like that, because that game is good, but it can get soooooo boring. Letter writing without a keyboard is mad.

Also, they should give us more RPG's set in the future. Mideval stuff is great, but its gets repetative. There is always some guy who rises up and saves the world with the help of an old wizard, and usually a pretty princess is involved.

My my first statement pretty much sumed up my idea of what the future of RPG's should be: tactical. FF tactics is the best FF game ever, if not the best RPG. It had a brilliant story, an intricate job system, and fun battles that made you think. If I had my way, they would be making a tactical RPG based on the book "Enders Game."

have you heard of Disgaea? It just came out in the states like 2 days ago... It got a 9.2 from IGN and other great reviews from other sites and magazines. It looks very awesome. For PS2 only.

hmm, thats not a bad idea, the book is very well written, but i'd hate to see some new name company come and make it and completely butcher the story. now if it wasn't based on Ender himself... than that would make an excellent game because what made the story so great is what happened between

Im guessing you stopped because of spoilers, but if you talking about what I think your talking, your right. Another good idea would be to have control over a captain of an army in battle school, and you can spend the entire game drafting soldiers and fighting in tougher and tougher battles.

hmm...maybe we should msg atari or westwood(although i'd hate it to be modeled 2 much like a C&C game). oh and btw to anyone who's literate in english get a copy of this book, its an excellent novel.

The key to the perfect RPG is to make it an RPG. I love the FF's, the Breath of Fires, the Chrono's of the world as much as anyone, but when you get right down to it, although you're "saving the world" your role never gets fleshed out larger than that. Apparently only people who have easily identified personality traits can defeat the "ultimate evil."

RPGs are an amazing genre, but the main thing that you would need in a perfect RPG is REAL character development (and Im not talking about an obligatory "Parent Dies" or "The Monsters are coming" flashback).

As far as more gameplay issues, I'd like to see every game be different, or at least try something new. That's what so fresh about tactical RPG's and makes them so much fun--every single battle can be different each time you play, which makes it a totally fresh experience. Along the same lines, it would be nice to add some replay value to new RPG's, which sit unused after being beaten more than any other genre of games.

And more than anything, the thing the perfect role-playing game would need a campaign to get it out to people and to find the people who would want to get lost in its world...many RPG's have hollywood-worthy sequences (if not better), and I believe they should be all advertised in this way.

Well, I'm done ranting about things. Oh yeah, and no perfect RPG would be complete without some sort of cute pink animal.
