PC Upgrade question

We have an old 300 MHZ Hewlett Packard that we would like to upgrade for my little brother so he can play some rudimentary games on it (Escape Velocity: Nova).

So I'm kind of looking around to just upgrade the processor at this point. My question is if I need to upgrade the motherboard (or any other part of the computer) along with it. I really don't know PC hardware very well, so if anybody could help I would appreciate it.

more the likly you will have to upgrade the motherboard too.

along with a few other things. by the time you get to upgrade enough and spend all the type looking for the older parts they dont make anymore...

might as well just hop on dell website or something and take a look at the computer for $450


just IMO, you might be able to upgrade it all and find the parts needed tho easily. they are outthere. but just IMO it would be better put to use for a newer computer.

In the end, upgrading is a hassle, unless it's something minor, like RAM or HDD.

Just buy a new Pc. They are cheaper nowadays. If you can't afford that, then try an upgrade, but beware (like Null said) that you may have to upgrade more than expected.

on a newer pc they arent too hard to upgrade tho.

because when you buy the parts you know thier limits and what they can do.

like my old motherboard my older 1.6ghz computer. im not sure what it can handle in terms of processors

on this one i build (was the 1.6 chip) was easy to put a 2.66 chip in cuz motherboard box said it would handle any such P4 chip

older ones are somtimes a little more tricky. they make new ones with upgrades in mind.

you will also probably have to replace the motherboard, and / or anything that may be built in (videocard, soundcard, ethernet, etc). If multiple devices are built in, than it could be quite costly to replace the entire thing. At that point you might as well buy a brand new system for 500$
