 I don't think that's entirely true.  You'd suprised the affects advertising has on people.  Because even though the game is what it is, these marketing people are trying to appeal to an audience through advertising (not just the game).  
 
It's a combination of advertising and the game.

The grown-up advertisements might spark a little initial interest, but once people flip over the box and see the cartoony pictures of the game, they'll figure Nintendo is kiddy-ish, and likely pay them no mind.

 I agree 100%.  It all comes down to the content...Games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Conker were steps (no, STRIDES) in the right direction...unfortunately, they lost Rare...but they continued on with Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime.  Although Nintendo seems to want to stick with the 'E for Everyone' titles, I think they really need to use their creative talent to fish into the 'mass market' sea.  Super Mario Sunshine or Pikmin 2 isn't going to do that...a cartoon Zelda isn't going to do that.   My closest friends are much more casual gamers than myself, and they think Nintendo is a joke for the most part.  Amongst 17 year olds and up, most people think that if you want a gaming system, you buy the PS2.  Then you have the 20% or so that know as much about XBox and think that it's another option.  Gamecube still seems to have that 'kid's toy' image...and Nintendo really needs to drop that if they want to compete.  And not just with Gamecube...once the PSP drops, I think that it will have a much less 'kid's toy' image than GBA.   Well, when the two guys in the batting order in front of  you hit back to back home runs like stu and PE just did it's hard to impress but I'm going to try.
 
I agree with them on almost all of their points but I don't think they're completely taking nintendo's stance into the equation.
 
I really believe that nintendo doesn't want to be the platform for the mature gamer. They want to be the platform that parents buy for their kids and then they want to grab a small % of the mature gamers. 
 
Nintendo's problem is: Everyone is buying playstations. It started with the psx and really shot through the roof with the ps2. Even the little kid now wants a playstation. Nintendo has always had the 13 and under market and now that they have lost it they desperately want it back. 
 
However, nintendo needs to make up for some of that lost profit, so they develop a few mature games and try and take a % away from sony (and, to a lesser extent microsoft) I really don't think nintendo cares about microsoft at all. They'd be more than content holding the majority of the 13 and under market and then taking whatever they can get of the mature market. its such a shame that now in this day and age, little kids want mature games so they can brag to there snot nosed frinds about slicing up nazis or shooting zombies or even civilians!
 
it's such a shame little kids can never truly apreciate the quality they are getting in Nintendo games (kiddy or not they are greatly designed) .
