Arrow Awards for Excellence in Motion Pictures

GameTavern's Most Cherished Films

Here you can ( and will ) throw in your votes for Greatest Film(s) of all time. You can put as many as 5 films on your list.

1. The Sting
-An astonishing look at the lives of two con artists. Masterful acting performances by Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Plot twists that con not only the characters in the movie, but also the viewer
2. The Great Escape
-This look at the lives of real P.O.W.s from WWII mixes the perfect amount of historical accuracy, suspense and humour
3. Lawrence of Arabia
-A historical epic led by one of the most impressive acting performances of all time from Peter O'Toole.
4. The Shawshank Redemption
-Beautfully written and recreated on film. Following the life of a prisoner who secretly works on an escape
5. Saving Private Ryan
-Spielberg has the viewer follow a story based in WWII. The film manages to deliver a stunningly realistic WWII atmosphere while keeping the viewer entertained

Perhaps not the best of all time, but the movies I enjoyed most:

Fight Club,
The Boondock Saints,
The Fugitive,
American Beauty,
and Aliens

5) Star Wars Trilogy - Nobody ever saw anything like it before.
4) Braveheart - Well damn, it just made you want to kill English
3) Metropolis - Simply the first epic ever and showed the first glimpse of what movies could do.
2) 2001 Space Odyssey - The greatest vision ever put to film.
1) Miller's Crossing - The Coen brothers best, and possibly least known movie. Every scene is remarkable and artfully shot. A movie oil painting that captured both the grit and romantic aspects of classic 1920's and 30's gangsters. John Turturro and Gabriel Bryne's best performances ever with a frighteningly funny turn by Coen brothers favorite, John Polito.

Honorable Mentions - Citizen Kane, Jaws, His Girl Friday, Casablanca, Taxi Driver, The Seventh Seal, The Manchurian Candidate, The Seven Samurai and Rashomon.

In no particular order...

Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Matrix Trilogy
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan

I can only think of those 4 right now as movies I very much enjoyed (I just consider the two trilogies as one movie...)

Honorable mention: Spirited Away (its not a motion picture, but its a masterpiece. Amazing animation and excellent story.)

1) Dr Strangelove: Simply the best comedy ever. A comedy about the cold war and sex. I catch another little joke every time I see it. Kubrick is a genious

2)Caddyshack: This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff. Here, I've got pounds of this.

3) Stu, if you like

Stalag 17: The movie (and the play) were the basis for Hogan's Heros. Stalag 17 is far more serious, even though it does contain much of the comedic genious of HHs.

4)The Untouchables: One of Sean Connery's best films. There's not much I can say about it except see it for yourself. It's great.

5)Thirteen Days: There's so many I'd love to put here, but I'm going with a personal favorite. The acting is so good in this movie and for someone who didn't get to actually live through the period the fear is still very real.

Surviving the Game. That movie was hilarious. Didn't it have Ice Cube? Man, I miss that movie.

Oh yeah, the turtle movies were great too. That and the ghostbuster movies.
