Default Xbox to Gain Ground in 03'

Quote:
The number of users of advanced games consoles soared by 128 percent in 2002, reaching 56.3 million worldwide, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics' Broadband Entertainment Strategies service. 75 percent of users own Sony's PlayStation 2, compared to 13 percent with Nintendo's GameCube, and 12 percent with Microsoft's XBox. Forecasts suggest GameCube will lose ground during 2003. According to the analysts, Nintendo could build a leading position in the $12 billion software market, but it must first abandon its present console strategy.

Global sales of advanced 128-bit consoles reached 32.9 million units in 2002, according to the research. PS2 was the choice of nearly 70 percent of buyers, while the remainder was split evenly between GameCube and XBox. Total sales of all platforms in 2003 are predicted to reach 36.2 million units, but GameCube's sales are expected to fall by 4 percent in 2003, while XBox sales will rise by 12 percent. Key drivers of this trend are XBox's growing software library, its clearly defined online gaming strategy, and Microsoft's substantial investments in the platform. By contrast, the GameCube's online strategy is unclear, and its support from publishers appears to waning.

Strategy Analytics recommends that Nintendo abandon its traditional console-exclusive software publishing strategy and publishes its games across multiple platforms. The company stands to lose relatively little, while gaining access to an additional 77 million console owners during 2003.

"Nintendo is missing out on the current generation of games players," says David Mercer, VP of the Strategy Analytics Global Broadband Practice. "Culturally it will be difficult for the company to change course, but it must do so in order to secure its long-term position as a leading games publisher."

Funny they ALWAYS leave out that little GBA detail, isn't it?

"OMG OUR XBOX BEATS NINTENDO HAHAHAHA"

"Hey look, GBA sales on the rise again! And where's the money you have to pay Nintendo for the games you have on the GBA?"

"Oh fuxxorz!"

I swear, they'll always leave that detail out. Always.

The press release was talking about advanced game consoles. Not all videogaming platforms.

Oh, and if you want to add the GBA. Lets just add all of Sony's other products and the billions of dollars Microsoft makes from Windows. Hm?

Besides, the GBA may sell a lot, but that doesn't keep it from sucking thoroughly. Its a piece of garbage that is a result of Nintendo's monopoly over the hand held market.

And people yell about Microsoft putting shoddy merchandise out to the public. At least you can SEE the windows operation system, unlike the GBA display. PIECE OF GARBAGE.

I think Nintendo is going to start loseing the hand held market soon what with new phones coming out that can make games look far better then the GBA. I don't know what it's like in the US or where ever but every one in the UK age 12 up has a mob phone (ok not every one but alot of people) So I feel Nintendo's day as the king of any market could be coming to an end (thats what happens when a company will not moves with the times even if they do make good games).

I think cell phones and GB's will remain seperate markets when it comes to pure gaming devices, and not just cell phones with games, or game things that are also cell phones (which I still consider a cell phone).

Well yea ok but IMO a kid that has a phone that can play games off a modem or a cart like nokia's new phone will not want to buy a GBA as he all ready has some think he has with him all the time that can do a far better job the the GBA can. So yes there will be a cross over from phone to hand held, IMO (only time will tell).

how can you possibly throw GBA into the picture? 1 Nintendo console, 1 Nintendo handheld vs. 1 Sony console or 1 Microsoft console...

We're not going by company here...because then Nintendo would lose that battle even moreso. Windows XP > Gamecube. 36" VVEGA XBR > GBA. See what I mean?

lol, GBA is a Nintendo fanboy's only savior in a console sales debate... I was debating about GCN at G4tv.com and you wouldn't believe how many people brought up Game Boy Advanced to defend thier system against MS and Sony.

Maybe I should bring up what TV you are playing your games on, and what sterio you are listening to your games with, and what OS you use on most computers... Microsoft and Aony are multi billion dollar companies. Nintendo can't even come close to comparing to them in profit, that's with the Game industry set aside.

Nintendo just cares too much for profit, and to Sony and MS profit doesn't really matter as much. Why? Because Nintendo needs every dime they can get, while MS and Sony could blow millions upon millions and not be hurt.
