Default SPAM comes in many forms

Before I begin I would like to say that I'm not only talking about GT, but about all message boards.

SPAM is not only flooding with posts, but also responding to a topic with a post that has no value. A post that has no opinion, no facts, no humor, or no information. For example, posts that just state, "I agree," "That sounds cool," or "LOL." If you agree with a post, tell us why you agree with it, and if you think something's funny, support your "lol" with a comment, or something that pertains to the thread.

A post that has no value is more of a waste of time then anything else. Not only does it take longer to download a page, but it also takes up space, and forces us to have multiple pages of useless messages.

The post count creates half of the SPAM, but at the same time a forum depends on the post count to keep visitors coming frequently. Post counts are kind of like women. You can't live with them, and you definetly can't live without them. So how can we solve this problem?

dblns may be the solution to this question. If we stress the importance of posting intelligent messages, the frequency of the # of posts will stay the same, and there will also be more effort to make intelligent threads and responses. The new dblns system is great, but I think it would be in the best interest of this site to make good responses recieve more points.

I had a feeling someone was going to say that. To tell the truth, I don't mind it once in a while, but it bugs me when every other post is a message that could be deleted and wouldn't alter the discussion at all.

Heh, I thought that confused smilie was a frowning smilie, because of the dark background. Anyway, I'm returning. I decided to a few days ago, but I realized that there was no Gametavern.com so I searched for another video game forum with good members, frequent posting, and something similar to UBB or vB, but I couldn't find anything good enough. Then I talked to cubedojo on AIM and he told me that it was .net now.

I see your point, Jin, but I suggest you quickly find a way to get over your distaste. Pointless posts always have been a part of message boards, and always will be a part of message boards.

And why not, really? Who says every single post has to be unbelievably intelligent or thoughtful? These things are about "expressing" how we feel, and what we're thinking, aren't they?

If someone reads a post and finds it funny, then replies "LOL," who cares? They thought it was funny, and made mention of the fact that they thought it was funny. Does their little reply hurt you? Are you overcome with some kind of unbearable emotional trauma upon reading that?

Of course not, so get over it. If someone wants to make a stupid reply that's just a short sentence or whatever, it's fine. No big deal there.

Personally, I would be more concerned with the fact that you're actually bothered by this (And so much so as to actually give it mention), as opposed to just overlooking it like everyone else.

If phrases like "LOL," or "That sounds cool," or "I agree" are getting to you as much as you seem to be letting on, maybe you just aren't a message-boardy kind of person. But really, whatever.

It's happened before, and it's going to happen again. I promise. Rewarding doubloons to those who post thoughtfully isn't going to solve the fact that people just want to spout off the first thing that comes to mind when they read something.

The simple fact is: You're just going to have to get used to it. Pointless posts really bothering you that much? Maybe you should try covering your eyes...

I don't expect a well thought out response to every thread that's posted, and I've seen 3 word responses over and over for the last 2 years on forums, but it would be nice to see people backing up their opinions once in a while. Raising the amount of dblns won't stop the short responses, but it may increase the number of intelligent responses. If the admins don't agree, that's fine. They do have more experience than I have, and are more likely to know what's best for the site.
