Colleges and Universities

Okay, I'm a senior in high school, and I'm looking at colleges..so basically, for those you who are in/have graduated from college, I was wondering, where did you go...did you like it... would you recommend it...and WHY to all of the above!

I'm at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. Personally, I love it and do a lot of my friends but like any college, many get here and aren't happy. A lot of this has to do with the size of the town, 16,000. There isn't much to do and the closest large city is St. Louis at 3 1/2 hours away. This bothers some people, not me.

The campus itself is beautiful and rather spread out although a bit small since this is a medium sized college (6,000 students).

The college itself has been here quite a while but until recently, it was Northeast Missouri State. Just another state college. In 1995, it changed it's name to Truman State University to reflect the change in mission to a Liberal Arts college. It is state run and therefor, rather cheap. Also, lots of scholarships are available. However, for out of state students such as yourself, it can get more expensive.

However, it's a bargain compared to most colleges these days and you get a great education here, especially if you want to be a teacher since it used to be a teacher's college.

I'm at Bakersfield College, and no I wouldn't reccoment it. After next year I'm probably going to transfer to the University of Houston, Temple, or Penn State.

I'm at Wageningen University and Research centre (WUR) in Holland. You could call it a 'green' University, with lots of studies on nature and food and stuff. I study 'forest and nature conservation', or 'forestry' as you could call it. It's really cool, I really like nature and forests. I already passed my first 2 exams, it was quite easy.

I'm at Swarthmore College which was listed last year as the number one liberal arts college in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report (not that that means much).

I love it here. A few great things about Swarthmore:

1. If you don't want an urban college but also don't want to be isolated, Swarthmore is ideally situated. The college itself is in a suburb with lots of trees and such, but Philadelphia is a short train ride away (the train station is on campus).

2. Swarthmore is a small college (if that's your thing) with about 1700 students. There is a definite sense of community about the place, and professors will actually know your name.

3. Excellent liberal arts education. I like liberal arts education because it makes sure to expose students to a wide variety of disciplines (at Swarthmore, you are required to take intro courses in six departments). You will definitely learn a lot and develop a good grounding from which you can enter any field you wish.

4. Campus is gorgeous.

Swarthmore is also very intellectual which may be a plus or a minus for you. It's not unusual for a discussion of bosons to enter a dinner conversation (although it never gets very deep). Swarthmore students are pretty heavy thinkers.

About the only problem I have with Swarthmore is that the population is very liberal. I don't have a problem with liberalism itself (although it sometimes gets ridiculous), but there are very few people you might even consider to be politically centrist. Also, it seems like a week never goes by without somebody getting offended by something and making a fuss.

When all my letters had come in, I had been accepted to Johns Hopkins University and Swarthmore College. I probably would have still gone with Swarthmore if I'd gotten into Harvard. The undergrad education is just better.

i am I.W.C.C. a little community college here in iowa, yay.... but when im done their i might head to Buena Vista University or University of Colorado

I'm in my first year at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. It's located away from the downtown area, which is nice because there's a lot more trees and such. It's not stuck way out the country though. There are many places nearby to eat, go shopping, etc. Getting around is easy too because a bus pass is included in your fees, and there are buses that run every half hour or something on campus. Actually it's much like how Xantar described Swarthmore. Except Philadelphia and train ride should be replaced with Toronto and bus ride.

I think McMaster is mainly known for its nursing and engineering programs, but I'm taking Humanities I and next year I'll be in the Bachelor of Arts program. I find their Humanities program to be very good, actually. I love the university and would most definitely reccomend it to anyone.

If there's one thing I've learned from being in college, it's that a lot of people are going to ask why you decided to go to the particular college that you chose. Anyways, I decided to choose McMaster because they were the only ones to respond to my application without a restraining order attached

. Actually, it was because out of the three I applied to, McMaster seemed to have what I was looking for. A good Arts (or "Humanities") program with Japanese included as one the language courses and an all-around nice campus. Plus I was looking for a place that would give me more independance. In order to get home, I would have to drive for about 18 hours, so I think I managed to accomplish that task somewhat.
