That.
I assumed way back when they made the Xbox it was to corner the console market and slowly transform it into another computer market, because computers is what Microsoft knew best. Plus computers are upgrade-able, not only making people have to spend money on them to keep them relevant and able to play current games, but it makes the company actually have to produce less products (meaning new consoles), and instead just make new parts to upgrade that 'console'. Maximum reward, very little work involved when compared to making a brand new, vastly better, different, and completely dynamic standalone system which makes your current creation look like crap, and your last creation look archaic.
Anyways, I am not a fan of what it could do down the road, if it's not obvious. I'm all for customization of a system (with things like Kinect etc) - but I wouldn't be a fan of "Aw fuck, my PS4/Xbox720 can't run this game because I don't have enough RAM."
That's why I chose console gaming over computer in the first place - everything was uniform. No upgrades were needed. I remember how much fury I had when I had to purchase that N64 Expansion Pak. "Why place a spot here for this, that shows you clearly know you're going to pound me for money in the future by making selective products. You have to have known you'd do this. If you didn't know, why the hell put that port there in the first place, motherfucker. I want to play my Donlkey Kong without having to upgrade my N64 first, damnit."
Won't this just allow them to essentially use their next Xbox
as a computer, rather than a "console". Meaning not only can PC games be played on the system (as long as the system can read the discs), but you can just make your actual CPU obsolete by just using your Xbox for all work/browsing/ gaming/porn-watching/movie-watching/renting/facebooking?
God damn you Microsoft. In foresight of the retrospect I will have 7 years from now, I hate what you will have done to console gaming by then.
I'm not saying that's what Microsoft
is doing; but I fear for it anyhow.
