Default Screw you, Virtual Console.

You know why I don't feel bad pirating the shit out of Nintendo games?

I have a Wii that my family shares. My GF just got a Wii. I've sunk quite a bit of money into games on the Virtual Console that I'd like to transfer over.

But wait. I can't do that. Unlike STEAM or any other service that lets you transfer games, Nintendo has some sort of cryptic DRM vice grip on their virtual console.

Please tell me there is something I can do?

You can break your Wii, send them to Nintendo and ask them to transfer the games to the other Wii.

I think...

It's crazy that I can't just use an SD card and move them, or re-download. I don't want the games on both Wiis, I want to move the games from one Wii to the other.

It's BS and shows that Nintendo still has ways to go getting up-to-date on the online department. You can send the the new console and the old console and they'll do the transfer, which is impractical, inconvenient and all around retarded. But that's the only way, yup.

Wait, what? VC content is tied to your console and not your account? Is that what everyone is saying?

Technically, it is tied to a Wii Shop account, but that account is tied specifically to that Wii. I lost a fair amount of VC games when my Wii was stolen.

If I were you, I would have no qualms about pirating the games you lost, in addition to some you forgot you didn't have.

No, but you've already paid them for those VC games.

I've heard they won't do a Wii to Wii transfer unless your old Wii has a hardware malfunction or goes belly-up. I'm not going to break my family's Wii....and I also heard that it's a 4-week+ downtime. That's totally crap.

I think I'm done with the Virtual Console. It's one of the few things I really love about the Wii. But this cryptic approach to DRM is antiquated and dumb.

I don't know about that one. I doubt they'll refuse to transfer them if you are willing to send them both Wiis in. But Nintendo has to get off their asses and change this. Sony actually lets you authorize up to 5 ( I think) PS3's which I still don't understand but is a better solution. You can de-authorize a system you will no longer use and have that spot open. EA did the same thing with Crysis 2 for PC, which I own. This is better while still keeping that same principle of not letting indefinite system download the same games. But I think everyone has to catch up to steam and XBL.

What's the official Nintendo word on this policy? "Too technologically and logistically difficult to implement?"

Gross Incompetence
Sheer Ignorance
or just clinging to tradition for the sake of it. Choose one.
Just these days Sony, EA and Nintendo actually gave the green light to the Stop Online Piracy Act, which shows how much of a control freak these companies are. Also, Sony lowered the amount of consoles that can share games from five to two. I had forgotten but my friend just happened to remind me about it a few minutes ago during chat. The funny thing is, these oppressive DRMs harm them more than they can help them.

Gabe Newell actually has a good view on the subject saying this is all a thing of the quality of the service but I still believe some people will just pirate anything they can for the sake of not paying anything. I have a friend who pirates all of his iPhone apps. There's no excuse for not wanting to pay $5 for Infinty Blade. So while this alleviates the problem, it doesn't get rid of it.

Ubisoft is another company that's been using the worse kind of DRMs on their games on PC. We can talk about this for a long, long time and not finish.
