NFL 2011-2012
I mainly created this thread to point out the Eagles just gave Vick a 6-year, $100 million contract, with $40 million guaranteed. Really?

Re: NFL 2011-2012
Well, here's the thing... Everyone looks at those big numbers like 6 years/$100 million, but we don't know exactly how that deal is structured. Most likely it's pretty front loaded so that if Vick declines in 3-4 years, they'll be able to cut him, and they'll only be out around 50-60 million for 4 years. There could also be hidden, hard to achieve bonuses in there so that the contract never reaches maximum value. Is that a lot? Not really, if Vick plays remotely like he did last season. Remember, Sam Bradford as a rookie last year got $50 million guaranteed. I know that was before the new CBA, but still..
Obviously, Vick is injury prone, so that's always a risk, but he was a top 5 QB last year, and that's how top 5 QBs get paid. Nobody seems to be mentioning Peyton Manning's similar deal when he has a potentially very serious and career threatening injury right at this moment.
Basically, you can say a lot of bad things about the Eagles, but their front-office is very cap-savvy. Did you see their off-season this year? Very creative and intelligent with their cap room I doubt this deal is going to hinder them too much. I still think they can sign Desean Jackson even with this contract.

Re: NFL 2011-2012
I guess... but he basically got that contract for one good year, right? I don't think that's quite comparable to Peyton Manning getting a long-term extension after being consistently a top QB for thirteen years and never missing a game.

Here's the further breakdown of the contract. So, basically, that 6th year at $20 million is a wash. We're really looking at 5 years/$80 million with only 35 million truly guaranteed. The $100 million thing just makes the agent and player look good.
Anyway, I agree that this is a bit of a risk. You're right that Vick has had only one great year, but it's not like he was awful before the prison term, he had just never quite developed into a true QB. I think he's learned a lot under Andy Reid and the Eagles' coaches, and that's what they're counting on.
Look at the Super Bowl victory incentives in the contract...If the Eagles get one of those during this contract, any amount of money would have been worth it.
On another note, I also heard that Vick won't be done paying all of his creditors until after the 2014 season, so he can only take about $300,000 the next few years. I know that's still a good chunk of money, but the man's still paying a lot for his mistakes.

Bond, wait until you see the obscene money Rodgers gets next year. I predict he will break all records. In any case, I see what you're saying, but it just shows how much the NFL is a quarterback driven league. The truly great QBs are so rare that teams will throw money at you for being just very good.

Good points. I suppose we will have to see how Vick does this year and beyond.
It should be a very interesting year in general.

Re: NFL 2011-2012
Ahh....Aaron Rodgers. As a Bears fan, I want to hate him, but he is so damn loveable. I like Rodgers and I hope he has a lengthy career. The whole "living under the shadow of Favre" thing was BS.
That was the nice thing about Favre. He was a tool and a chode so you could hate that fucker on and off the field.

Re: NFL 2011-2012
On another note, the NFL (as in the company) has taken over Green Bay. It's quite the production to have the first game of the season.

All I know if Jermichael Finley better score tonight... and often.

Re: NFL 2011-2012
If he can stay healthy (big if), should have one of the best years for a TE in recent memory. I'm not a fan of his less-than-humble attitude though, so hopefully he can keep that under control.

Thank you! I haven't seen too much of him except for in this game ... assuming he was quite good in college?

Yeah, easily our best player for the last couple of years. Played WR and even QB occasionally.
