When TF2 came out, it rivaled some of the best multiplayer games in terms of balance, gameplay, and teamwork required. The class updates threw things off a bit, but fans were left with the impression that all classes would get updates thus reverting it back to a balanced shooter. And then came the hats and the marketplace and having to unlock weapons and it went south pretty rapidly in terms of cohesive gameplay.
What can you do though...the game was practically given away even at the time of launch, and it was apparently an experiment in content.
