Olympic Opening Ceremony
Who's tuning in tonight?
I'm making some kickin' rad Lettuce Wraps and tuning in at 6pm. I hope it's good. There's a ton of people at PG who went to the rehearsals and they said it wouldn't be disappointing. They said there was a lot of filler though, where Nelly Furtado and Sarah McLachlan will be tonight.
Also, I was reading the newspapers and everyone was wondering who would light the torch. Personally, I have no clue who it will be. Any ideas? People were saying Wayne Gretzky wouldn't for sure, and in his place would be Terry Fox's mom. Who knows.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony
Wayne Gretzky is confirmed to definitely not be lighting it.
I really hope it is Terry Fox's mom - then again we may be biased.
I'm watching it at 4 when it's starting, because the Canucks game's on PPV and I have nothing better to do at 4.
I know a guy who's in the ceremony, and he said it will blow my mind out of my own asshole.

I'm surprised VANOC hasn't already sued him.

VANOC cornered the market on everything related to the Olympics.
Business aren't allowed to display anything Olympic style, they are not allowed to even use the word "Olympic" unless they are official sponsors.
Radio stations aren't even allowed to say "Vancouver 2010", "Whistler 2010", "Vancouver Olympics" etc. in any way for self-gain because those have all been trademarked by VANOC - unless they are official sponsors.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony
I was downtown today for a bit...it was pretty wild.
Def watching the opening ceremonies.
$5 says it's our asshole premier Gordon Campbell that lights the torch.

Kind of a dick move.
I saw the crash and some photos. 144 miles an hour to 0 all at once, lots of blood.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony
It looks like the Canucks fucked up the lighting of the cauldron. It was cool that Gretzky lit it though.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony
Yeah, I understand that. What I said wasn't even necessarily a joke, it's just real. I mean, you're supposed to have this happy ceremony celebrating these games and the saddest thing possible just happened. I couldn't even really watch the ceremonies because of it. Any excitement for the Olympics is definitely tempered. It's sad as hell. I'm actually going to delete that post because I don't really want to seem insensitive and I didn't quite mean it to be that jokey. It's just a really bad way to start these Olympics. I guess especially with these high-flying downhill events, it will be tough to keep the recent accident out of my head.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony
I enjoyed the ceremony up until the end really.
The malfunction with the torch lighting and then having a second one further away was eh.
And this pic sums it up.

Id would have to agree.
The floor projections were really cool.
Also that fiddle player was either batman or Satan.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony
I liked it, actually.
The fiddle music, honestly - made me feel Canadian. And fiddle music hasn't ever done that to me before.
And with the malfunction of the floor, I say big deal. What was lost? 35 seconds? A tiny bit of ppageantry? I mean, Gretzky would have still had to run the flame.
I liked it. Certain parts of it actually got to me. Like when the Canadian athletes walked in, and when the slam poet was giving his speech.
I was not let down with what happened.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony
I agree with Typhoid. There was something much more human about the ceremony than China's mechanistic mass. Actually, both ceremonies would tell an outsider observer quite a lot about each country.
