Chōchin'obake:

a form of Japanese spirit that originate from objects reaching their 100th year of existence, thus becoming animate. Chōchin'obake in particular are created from the chōchin lantern

Kraken:

Since the late 18th century, kraken have been depicted in a number of ways, primarily as large octopus-like creatures, and it has often been alleged that Pontoppidan's kraken might have been based on sailors' observations of the giant squid. In the earliest descriptions, however, the creatures were more crab- like than octopus-like, and generally possessed traits that are associated with large whales rather than with giant squid. Some traits of kraken resemble undersea volcanic activity occurring in the Iceland region, including bubbles of water; sudden, dangerous currents; and appearance of new islets.

My brother read a book where the myth was that the Kraken was so large that he always was in all seas at the same time.

I don't know the Japanese thing, and you picked a terrible picture (hm Typhoid could rig the whole contest with the pictures he chooses). So I'll go for a Kraken.

I didn't know the "Japanese thing" before making up this contest either.
And that was one of the better/hilarious because it's a costume pictures.
But it's not off. All it is - is a paper lantern with a giant mouth, legs and arms.
