NINTENDO GAMECUBE MSRP Set At $149.95
REDMOND, Wash., May 20, 2002: Less than one year after successfully launching NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) at a mass-market price, Nintendo of America Inc. is dropping the MSRP to $149.95, effective Tuesday, May 21, 2002.
To date, Nintendo has shipped more than 4.5 million systems worldwide and its hit title, Super Smash Bros.(TM) Melee, has topped the 2.5 million mark.
Today's announcement comes as the $27 billion interactive entertainment industry gathers in Los Angeles for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) to preview the latest and greatest games coming out this holiday.
"It's simple, really: Nintendo is committed to offering our players the best games and the best price," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "We were the first manufacturer to reach the $199 price level and now we're leading the industry to $149 -- allowing even more players around the world to get their hands on our legendary favorites like Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and Metroid this year."
Nintendo's four headliners arrive in brand new adventures, exclusively on NINTENDO GAMECUBE:
In Super Mario Sunshine(TM), the world's most beloved plumber arrives for a tropical vacation...only to discover that his good name has been soiled by adversaries -- and it's his job to clean up the mess.
The elfin hero Link sports a brand-new look that perfectly reflects his emotions throughout The Legend of Zelda(TM), as he embarks on an epic quest across land and sea to rescue his sister.
With Star Fox(R) Adventures, Nintendo and Rare Ltd. create one of the most technologically advanced video games in history, with a compelling and whimsical story line that parallels a feature film.
Fans around the world finally get the chance to find out what it looks like to meet Space Pirates face-to-face as Metroid(R) Prime gains first-person perspective.
In total, Nintendo and third party partners will expand game portfolios by year-end to more than 300 for Game Boy Advance and more than 150 for NINTENDO GAMECUBE. While retaining its unrivaled appeal to players of all ages, Nintendo is also aggressively moving forward with games designed to appeal to a broader audience with exclusives such as Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem(TM), and Resident Evil Zero.

Well, the price cut was obviously going to happen considering what the competition did .

Although it makes me a bit scared to think that all these early price drops may lessen a console's life on the market, I believe this was probably in the fan's (and Nintendo's) best interest. I just can't let my friend know about this... he still owes me $95 (he already paid $40) for our extra Cube we sold him... He might think we're ripping him off... then again, we included a game and memory card.

Sounds good! So that is probably $249.99 for all us Canadian folk. I just have to bide my time now for some more price drops, then all three consoles will be mine! MINE!!!!
EDIT - WOAH! Link saves his sister? WTF? Unless nintendo is pulling a Star Wars on us, it looks like Link will be rescuing another lady this time around!

Maybe Zelda is his sister. That would be a real Star Wars rip-off. Then, all we'd need is for Ganon to turn out to be Link's father.

I was expecting a price drop from Nintendo. Anyway now they don't have the $100 difference they had in the past. But still $50 is one game. Or two extra controllers. Or an extra controller and a memory card.

The price drop was inevitable. When the GC first came out, one of the biggest advantages was that it was cheaper than the other two. I doubt Nintendo would want to lose that advantage, and pay the price in units sold.

Everything is basically the same now. $50 dollar difference between the GameCube and the Xbox and Playstation 2.
I'm sort of surprised the price wars started this early though, but I guess considering how old the Playstation 2 is it was bound to happen sooner or later.

This is an advantage for us consumers... But aren't Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft losing big bucks on each system back with the old prices?!?!?! Now they are losing $100 bucks more on each system, except Nintendo, which are losing $50 more.
