Depends on the bear. A human might be able to take a black bear in hand to hand, while the soulless and vile Grizzlies and Polar bears will mess up just about any land mammal on the face of the planet.

Also, rarity is not a sign of genetic strength. Snow Leopards are few because they are WEAK.
