I Feel Like Shit
I just had to terminate the employment for one of the guys who works in my department. I have no doubts that it was the right decision, but there is no part of that experience that is easy or rewarding. Its tough to look someone in the eye and change their life in ways they were never expecting, and he never expected this, even though he should have.
Being on the side of management has given me a whole new respect for managers as a whole. Inanimate objects are easy to deal with, but people are a whole other matter. It is a tough job to have and even tougher to be good at. In the end I guess its good I feel miserable. If I didn't, then I'd know I have a problem.
Ugh, I need a beer and a cigarrette.

Anyone else think that sounds really badass?
And yeah, to be good at that requires one to not have a conscience.
I also agree with Bond in this matter.

Just view the department as the "Blue Team", and consider all the people you're firing or, "owning" - "noobs".

He wanted to do what he wanted to do when he wanted to do it, regardless of the number of times we had to meet with him in attempts to correct his behavior. In the end the final straw was when we discovered that while he would behave a certain way around me and my Director, he would continue his unprofessional ways when not around us. I can't help someone who doesn;t want to be helped, or worse, thinks they're "getting one over on us". I don't even want to think about the number of hours I wasted in trying to mentor him when it became apparent he had no respect for me or the company. Its a shame because I have a great team of people who work together very well, and he just never bought in.
Not to go into detail, but there were also cultural and sexual sensitivity issues as well.

Re: I Feel Like Shit
Sucks at any rate. Thankfully I've yet to be on the receiving end of one, but a higher up I was somewhat friends with, he had to do his first firing. It was just due to lack of extra employee's needed due to losing some big contracts. Told us after it that he just wanted to go home and drink but someday I may be in that position of having to axe someone. Won't be nice internally but gotta be the messenger.
Sounds like he didn't care so it may not (hopefully) have hit you as hard as say someone who was truly working hard but for one reason or another they are terminated.
