Default Vampyr's Blog : June 1st. Link, I Choose You!

I actually had a Geodude nicknamed Link in Pokemon Red.

A quick update on my personal status, only indirectly related to video gaming: just completed my Sophomore year at the University of Kentucky, where I study Computer Science. I currently work as a Software Developer at Perot Systems, and live in an apartment with my girlfriend her dorm roommate from last semester. I don't play a lot of video games during school, because if I'm not studying I'm working.

But now, during the summer I have the time to play, and finally the financing to support my...tastes.

Now, what have I been doing with my new found free time and money? Well, some of you may have seen in another thread I created that I have purchased an LCD HDTV, which I am currently watching Ninja Warrior on as I write this. I've also finally gotten around to purchasing a new game for my Ninendo DS, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, although I haven't really gotten into it yet.

So far this summer I have spent the majority of my gaming time playing either The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GCN version, which for some reason I never beat.) And it's absolutely amazing. I don't think I can say it's better than OoT, but definitely a master piece. It's been a long time since I've set around looking forward to when I could get home just to play a video game, especially a Zelda.

The rest of my time, believe it or not, has been spent playing Pokemon. I never beat Sapphire, so I've been enjoying that...but I finally realized that I don't really like Sapphire. I don't like the world that much, I hate Team Aqua/Magma, and the new Pokemon are terrible.

However, my girlfriend and I, being the Pokemaniacs that we are, decided we wanted something new. Or old. So we made a 15 minute journey to a Chinese restaurant, and then went to a Target and I bought Pokemon Firered for me, and Leafgreen for her.

Thus far my experience with it has been fantastic. It's a great trip back down memory lane, recollecting all the old Pokemon and seeing all the old characters. And returning to Team Rocket, who are actually evil and mean. Not only is it as good as the old games with all the good pokemon, but it's been retouched to look as good as Ruby and Sapphire, with added islands for catching Pokemon from the gold/silver versions. I also bought a GBA SP link cable, so we can trade and battle.

Thus far, it's been a pretty geektastic summer. My parents are coming down tomorrow for my birthday (which is next Wednesday), and I might be getting Pokemon Diamond for DS, or maybe one of the DS Castlevania games. Along with boring apartment stuff, like toothbrush holders. :\

More to come later.

I was gonna suggest Diamond/Pearl.
I have had less time to play it since hate playing handhelds on public transportation. Especially since only 15 mins on the bus. 25 mins of walking to get to work.

And why no TP on Wii, other than not owning Wii I figure.

Geektastic summers are the best.

I remember my days of pokemon. I started out with Pokemon Blue for the Original GB. Then I got Pokemon Trading card game for GB. And then that was it.

To be honest, I kind of want to get back into that game. get sapphire or something for the GBA.

Yeah, I love getting obsessed with things during summer. You could say it's healthy. There was one summer where I was completely into Mario Golf 64, Mario Golf GBC and real golfing. I would pretty much practice my chipping outside and then come in and play Mario Golf. And on saturdays and sundays we would all go to Pitch and Putt. What a great summer.

If you're looking to buy a new one, and you don't have a DS, I would recommend Emerald. It is to Ruby/Sapphire what Yellow was to Red/Blue and Crystal was to Gold/Silver. It has extra pokemon to catch, and a lot of added features.

Personally, Gold/Silver were my favorites in the series. It was awesome how you had an entire new region with new gyms, but after beating the Elite 4, you could travel back to the old region from Red/Blue, see it all in color, and see what all had changed, and beat every gym there, too. Not to mention the pokemon added in Gold/Silver are probably the best.

And yeah, I would definitely say getting obsessed with things occasionally is healthy. I'm sort of obsessed with games in general at the moment. I picked up Castlevania Portrait of Ruin for my DS yesterday, and my girlfriend got Professor Layton and The World Ends with You.

So my next blog will probably cover those games.

I got all PKMN in Blue/Red. No Mew of course.
G/S was also great, that game had so many fun stuff to do... But somehow it distracted me from the main game. I never got far in Kanto and I never got more than 200 pokémon, I think.

Edit: So far, my geek summer consists of Terminator (movies + series), Half-Life (2 + expansions) and... probably something more. Oh, Super Smash Bros. Brawl if it ever comes out here.

Pokemon Diamond is pretty good... except I stopped playing it after I caught the legendary thing, haha.
