I think you misread his points on both account.
In point 4 especially in terms of Half-Life 2 he was referring to starting off with some crappy (don't judge me about the crowbar) weapon when you want the real guns right away. Not about it being less "fun" as a game.
On his second point, he was more referring to games that have multiplayer aspect but only online like the games he mentioned. He wasn't talking about dedicated single player games.

Yup, there is nothing worse than not being able to do split screen. It is a dirty word nowadays since everything has to be online but people have real friends still.
Anyhow, I liked the article and agreed with most of them.
Especially about escort missions and non-skippable cutscenes.
