Tenth anniversary of the DVD...in America anyway

So, I saw this guy at another board talk about how yesterday marks the tenth anniversary of this amazing format that trounced VHS and even LaserDisc. It even introduced complete season sets of TV shows while VHS usually just offered "best of" sets from TV shows.

I remember back in 1999, I swore I'd only buy a DVD player once they were able to record programs like a VCR. Then when I heard that the two Power Rangers movies were going to DVD, I caved in and started longing for a DVD player. That was the absolute first DVD I ever got, and that was March 30 of 2002, which is also when I got my DVD player. My first DVD box set was Jurassic Park - Collector's Edition/The Lost World: Jurassic Park - Collector's Edition. My first season set was Transformers - Season 1.

I then got another DVD player on August 3 of the same year, but it's actually a PS2.

Then I got a new computer in November of 2003, which also had DVD playability.

Now I'm being told that either the Wii will have an attachment that will give it DVD playability, or that there will be a new model that does play DVDs. Whichever one it really is, it's all good. I've already got three means of playing DVDs.

As of today, I currently have 195 DVDs. You can bet the number will be growing and growing in time.

By the way, it's said that Twister was the first movie to make it to DVD. Can anyone confirm this?

I rent movies from Netflix and check them out from the library as well and then burn copies of them if I enjoy the film.

My first DVD player was my old iMac. And I think my first DVD was Pokemon: The Movie 2000.

I just blasted through all five seasons of 24 and am now watching Firefly.

I currently watch DVDs on my Xbox 360. And it works wonderfully. Never skips or freezes.

The first DVD I watched was X-men when I set up my home theater. I still remember the Shinnnnnnnngggggg sound going past three speakers when wolverine drew his claws. I also remember borrowing The Matrix and that was my favourite DVD to watch.

Then I got the Xbox playback kit and I watched DVDs on my Xbox downstairs because my mom and dad used the home theater a lot. I watched movies with them upstairs. I didn't watch much downstairs, but then my girlfriend introduced me to Arrested Development and Firefly, and I watched those downstairs. I never used the PS2's DVD because it was a piece of crap.

Now here I am, and my newest laptop, the mac, watches DVDs. I've watch 3 seasons of 24 for free from my campus library now, as well as a bunch of documentaries, some CSI: Miami, and everything I own, including seasons of Miami Vice. I also have watched Lost and Miami Vice with my girlfriend on my Xbox 360 once I got s-video for it.

DVD's been great. I don't see myself going HD for a long time.

Same here!... Only I don't have a kickin' home theater setup so much as a 32" SDTV with a couple gigantic speakers from the 70s or 80s sitting next to it...

I no longer have that particular X-men DVD (or any of the X-men movies for that matter), though I have since then amassed a collection of just about 200 DVDs, most of which are films, though I own maybe 10 TV/Misc. DVDs including the likes of The Beatles Anthology...

The latest addition to my collection was all 21 Bond films, thanks to Amazon's very nice 1-day limited quantity sale on all 4 boxed sets... And Casino Royale's release...

Good times, DVDs... Good times...

Am I the only one whose PS2 hasn't given them trouble with DVDs? Not that I used it often for playing DVDs though.

After not working for a couple of years and being flat out broke, I started a new job in March 2002. I remember planning to use my first paycheck on getting a DVD player. I got the Panasonic RV32.

No, it worked, just not well.

My PS2's never given me trouble with DVDs...
CD-based media (PS1 games, blue-bottom PS2 games) on the other hand...
