4 years already...crazy how long its been so far.

*Fellow Gametavern'ers, this post I have made may or may not contain comments that seem biased or unbiased. Due to my past, you have a narrowsided view of me. If you can't look beyond the fact I consider the other consoles equally, then the loss is on you.

I still remember what I was doing when I heard.

I think this date will go down in history just like the landing on the moon or when Kennedy was shot.

I was in high school in Manhattan when it happened. Our principal was actually trying to keep it from it. We had to listen to our own radios to actually find out what was happening. The bastard. Didn't see any of the images until I got home late that day...quite difficult getting home too...so few trains were running. And then a day or two later school reopened and I never experienced a commute that silent before. I actually never even passed by Ground Zero until a month ago accidently.

I was sleeping when 911 happened. Then I went to jazz band at my timezone's 7 am and I was hit with the first of many babbling idiots who tried to describe the event to me. The day was completely normal but as time went by more and more people got overly sympathetic about it. By the next day all the newspapers were filled to the brim with 911 material and still things weren't clear.

Sure, I accept it was a bad tragedy, and I feel some level of sympathy over it, but not as much as other people.

Same. I tired of hearing about it. Which is sad that the media can take something like this and drive it in so hard that you don't feel anything about it anymore.

I mean, 50 years from now are they still going to be on the news saying: "Today we reflect back upon the tragedy of 9/11..."

The September 11th attacks are arguably the most significant events to have occurred so far in the 21st century in terms of the profound economic, social, political, cultural and military effects that followed in the United States and many other parts of the world. But that didn't stop me from feeling sickened by the merchants attempts to cash in on it with their cheap bumper stickers, pins, and other 'decorations'. I also agree with Dyne and Vampyr that the media overplayed the event way too much in that after a while I began to feel annoyed when hearing the words 'September 11th'. I don't mind people mourning for lost ones today but I don't want to see any trashy news segments on it.

i was on the last day of the first week of highschool, back in grade 9, i was walking by the library and in there there were many listening to a radio. I thought that it was for a filming class or something like that, i didn't know something serious was up.

And to be completely honest, I was, and am, sick of hearing about this.

And no disrespect at all, but I dont like how they turned this 9/11 thing, into some super patriotism device. Even look at the first post made in this thread.
Yes it was a big catastrophe, and tragedy, but nationality should have nothing to do with it.

Perhaps if your country was attacked by terrorists your view may be different. It's our country, why the hell do you care if someone wants to show pride in the country they live in?

Thats not what I meant.

Like I said, I know it was a tragedy, but I dont like how at times, its marketed to the public as a reason to boost patriotism.

And you're right, Im sure I would be talking different if Canada was attacked, but I mean, (not to attempt to start an argument) when Bush was making campaign speeches and whatnot, what did he mention the most? 9/11.

And I have no problem with showing pride in your country. I'm saying it in a way seems silly to take pride in your country over the fact you got attacked by terrorists.

When has any Canadian said something like:

"Damn I'm proud to be Canadain, thanks to SARS."

I kinda found it odd how folks in the middle of the country got a hell of a lot more riled up by it than those who actually lived within the city. Besides those people I knew who lost friends and family most seemed to disregard it after about a week...probably even sooner if the media wasn't so damn crazy.

I was watching the morning news when it happened. I woke everyone up and was all excited for some reason. I had a smile on my face and I don't know why, but I guess it was just because of how [i]rea[/ii] it was. First time I ever saw somethign like it and I was experiencing it as it happened.

When I got to school I told my friends about it and they said that they'd heard about something like that too. We joked around with the idea that some of our classmates were terrorists (this was like 8th grade) and just went on with the rest of the day.

Now, I just see the day as another in the year. No mourning or anything because I don't really feel that close to it or care for that matter

Apathy eh?

Most people I know forgot what day it was today (including me) until I just happened to look at the calendar. It's not really apathy, I don't think. I just take it as a sign that we're moving on and doing the things we have to do. My particular circle of friends was more concerned about trying to help Katrina victims than commemorating 9/11, and in my view, that's really the way it should be.

By the way, I'm an American, and I also think equating 9/11 to patriotism is a little silly. It's not anything to be ashamed of, either, but the fact is the terrorist attacks happened, all of us here couldn't really do anything about it, most of us weren't even actually affected, and that's all there is to it. I'm quite proud of the charitable outpouring that came in the aftermath, but waving this particular date around just smacks of opportunism.

But go ahead and be proud to be an American. Certainly there's nothing wrong with that either.
