Re: The official N5 thread: speculate!!
Joeiss -- I'm going to use your post as a basis for mine.
N5 needs to do four things and it'll be fine, but allof these are critical:
1)Make a system with multiple "levels" of functionality, something anybody can buy. Think "N5 Lite," "N5 Standard," and "N5 SP" (Or Some other catchy phrase) as an example.
N5 Lite MUST HAVE:
- Game Disc' Playback (Duh!)
- 4 Controller Ports
- Backwards Compatibility
- A $200 or LOWER Price Tag, thinkof this as the "Kiddie" model, the one a homeless bum could afford.
N5 Standard MUST HAVE:
- Game Disc' Playback (Duh!)
- 4 Controller Ports
- Backwards Compatibility
- DVD/CD Playback
- Dial-Up and BBA
- An "Improved" Controller Design
- A spot for a "GB Player II" add-on
- A $250 or LOWER Price Tag
Thisis the "Standard" MOdle, nothing special, nothing stripped dwown, it can holdit's own against a PS3 but isn't souped up like a car with an oversized engine!
N5 SP MUST HAVE:
- MULTIPLE COLORS, SILVER SHOULD BE STANDARD (I'm sick of 1980's style Black cases)
- Game Disc' Playback (Duh!)
- 4 Controller Ports
- Backwards Compatibility
- DVD/CD Playback
- DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW/CD-R/-RW Playback
- DVD-R/-RW/-RAM "TiVo Style" Writing abilites (-RAM since Panny supports it above anything else)
- Dial-Up and BBA
- An "Improved" Controller Design
- A Built-In "GB Player II"
- A "Free" GAME WITH PURCHASE of the system or, at the very elast, A DEMO DISC!
- A Price tag NO HIGHER than $500!
Thisis the "Collector's Model" the words "Where's da toaster?" come to mind when you see this and most people owning one will probably have a Mario bros. tatoo or someting equalluy FanBOYish that makes it stand out as a colelctor's item, unlike the other two ssytems these would be found only in Gamng adn Electronic stores, don't expect Wal-Mart or Target to carry something like this though. Thisis on the levelof SOny's PSX but at half the price, it'd clearly show who's calling the shots with the fancy shmancy systems.
Joiees and Jonbo are both right about how people make decisions based on 'extras' that are not really important. I agree with Joiess's remark that "Nintendo should exploit this." and having multiple "levels" of an N5 allows them to really milk every dime out of it the wa Sony did for the PS2.
2)Have a kick ass online feature. Couldn't have said this better myself. However, I wouldn't use anyting like Xbox Live, not in it's current state. Start with the general idea of Xbox live, expand on it, but make sure the end result is 100% different and that a PS2 gamer can compete with an N5 gamer, also find a way to make it so that your ISP can somehow integrate your Online gaming subscription into tier services. Nintendo could aprtner with somoene like AOL or another ISP Gianmt, if you're an AOL memebr you could geta Discount, or if you used the Onine features througha "Bring your own acccess plan" meanng Nintendo doesn't have to supply a "Nintendo ONline ISP" for gaming you could get some ca$h back on this feature. Basically makeit so that I'm not paying $20 a month to play one game that isn't even fun and have a REFUND POLICY for gams that tank, meanng that if, say Super Mario Online is a dysmal failure, I don't have to pay $50/.00 for the thing only to loose service after a week, and if the game is just utilizing special Online features and isn't MMO or anything, consider a Gamespy style approach of "Pay for extras, play for free" whree youg et more if yu're willing to shellout the $$$, most kids aren't going to pay $20 for Poke'mon online. Full voice support, possibly video chat as well, and affordable prices -- LESS THAN a "Normal" ISP, or, if possble, tie it into your regular ISP subscription, and amazing games that go online, nopt Poke'Mon online, or "The SIms nline -N5 Edition" or any other "Making Money Online" (MMO) games that are riding a franchise hype, SW Galaxies comes to mind under the "Hype" line that needed a few more beta tests, and these games shuld come with FREE TRIALS or, at the very least a FREE DISC so I'm not paying, say $50.00 for a lousy game. Best idea is to charge $50 for a one-time "Activation" of a game in your acount and then any upgrades or modifications should cost around $10 each one time only, this owuldkeep games alive and cause people to pay for those precious servers hosting them...
3)GREAT games any time, all the time. GCN's launch lacked a killer app. No Mario, no Zelda, and as good as Luigi's Mansion was, it wasn't Mario, put him back ina Sidekick role and be sure to have "Clasic" franchises have at LEAST TWOS equels on a new console. Start with a Mario game or a Zelda, and then, grab Square Enix and ahve them tae that Reissue of FF VII they're doing and PORT IT to the GCN as a "Sequel" to FF VI which was the last Nintendo FF Game, thus making FF: CC stand out a bit more and allowing for the F Franchise to also help Nintendo the wayit heped Sony... All else will follow... Or do this....
4)Release a NES BOX SET of classic games for the N5 called "Virtual NES: Celebrating 20 Years of Nintendo! It will have all 500+ NES Games, as well as "Making Of's" a lookbac at the Big "N" and other goodies based n the NES, the packaging can even eb a BOX shaped like the ORIGINAL "Front-loading" NES!. I've been anting ALL of my classic NES games update for a new system so I can continue to play them as well as the ability to play NES gam,es I never had! I need someting likethis and evrey Fan and FanBOY of the NES would pick this up, it'd be a nice "Classic" throwback and since the graphics WOULDN'T be polsihed up to 16-Bit standards as was done with odler NES games that were reissued it'd be EXACTLY like the NES games the only differance would be Stereo Sound, this would allow "Reissues" of NES games to be done with a new look and feel while still allowing classic aNES games to all eb ther, at launch, with a few Killer titles securing NItnendo's palce in the industry again.. This would be the leading title that will make N5's library surpass that of the PS2 by adding BC with the GCN and reisuing EVERY NES Game, Nintendo will have created a must have for colelctors, and a key selling point that NOBODY else has, Sure online is great, so is DVD Writing Capabilites, but NOBODY else would have the NES LIBRARY in their launch! Complete this with color photo's, looksbacks at the NES and various "featuretes" as wella s multle disc's and Nintendo will be able to "coast" for awhile and give classic gamers smethign to bring them back, as well as giving enw gamers that edge they need with all the toehr flashy stuff!!!
If Nintendo can pull off these four things, they should have no trouble selling the N5. If they flub up the system itslef though, it's all voer, N64 had great games, but the system was a wreck! Case in point: Best system, most interesting most ap[pealing and your'e set. Also cosnider adding some "Useless specs" -- sure that eFOrce Card in the XBOX sucks as does the processor compared to the GCN's stuff, and even to some of SOny's stuff, but that doesnt matter when someone see's the GCN operating at 400MHz and the Xbox operating at 933MHz, they automaticcly think the Xbox is beter, faster chip, or a comparison chart that works for all systems to proove Ninteodo has the better sysrem, if they made tier chip even one MHz faster than the otehr Next-gen consoles they'd be set.
