A lot of these indie films depend on the Oscars to give them some publicity to get them known. The director's and actors/actresses win awards and go on to bigger (but not necessarily better) movies.

S'why a lot of people were upset when they tried to stop the Academy from giving the judges individual copies of the movies, meaning they would have to go out to see them on their own. If the judges were given copies of the indie films, they probably wouldn't see them at all and the indies would not gain that publicity.
