My NES, SNES, N64, GBC, GBA, and my Gamecube never had any problems... Same with my Genesis and Dremacast.
The only 2 that ever did have problems were my PS1 and PS2... Gee, I wonder why. But seriously, you guys know about that stupid warranty sticker on the back of the PS2, right? If you take that out, then the warranty dies. The reason I took it out was because taking that out is the only way to open up your PS2. If I say that to Sony, I know they won't repair it... Bastards!

Re: Re: Re: I am really, really pissed off with my PS2
This is what the gaming market is turning into.
When a company that makes other products (MS and Sony) makes another product, they don't care about the quality of the hardware. I'm guessing thats why PS2's and Xbox's break down more often. (This is what I have heard, so don't try to think I'm sticking up for Nintendo). Nintendo on the other hand mainly produces the 'Cube and the GBA (SP). Within the past month, Nintendo said that they were going to switch the production method of the SP because people were complaining about how the some color's on the screen looked "washed". Problem was dust particles getting trapped int he screen as it was being made. But I haven't seen Sony say that they were going to make their cd/dvd drive more "stable" or their console more stable so that it won't break down after 2 years.
I expect many flamings, but I will just ignore them.

Re: Re: Re: Re: I am really, really pissed off with my PS2
I think that you are basically screwed if you opened your PS2, thus removing the warranty sticker. If that sticker is removed, then they will just tell you that you were the one who damaged it probably.
And Jonbo, I think you are incorrect about your last statement. Sony did indeed upgrade the PS2's that they are making. I am not sure if they are more "stable", but they did receive an upgrade nonetheless.

I know that Sony has made an upgrade adding DVD+R/+RW support (maybe -R/-RW, but I can't remember) and having the built in infrared port for the remote and whatnot. But they removed the firewire port, which was odd (I think it was the firewire port, correct me if I'm wrong).
But the gist of what I was getting at, is that Sony, with all the money they have made from the PS2, they should at least make a more stable system that won't break down as quickly. Or if it does happen, offer a cheap replacement. ie: system won't read dvd's, send it in and get the drive replaced for say $20-$30.

Jon the only reason nintendo is more stable is because it has less to do. The entire game is loaded to the nintendo ram and then run from there. But I've had problems with nintendo products but nowhere near as much as I have from my PS2 but when I got my XBOX the only problem I've ever had is with a scratched cd. so I .... I lost my point so I'm going to add a knock knock joke to the end of my post

Re: I am really, really pissed off with my PS2
It's unfortunate that this happened...I haven't had a single complaint about my PS2 since the day I bought it in October 2000. Hope everything works out.

How can a 'Cube game be entirely loaded into RAM? It only has 48 megs of RAM, and I'm pretty certain most 'Cube games are over 48 megs (with the exception of probably Animal Crossing and Ocarina of Time/Master Quest).

I know that game's can be run from ram. That's what loading is for. I'm just saying that you can't keep the lid open for the ENTIRE game.

I meant if a person's warranty is expired they could get a small fix for cheap.
Or if the person can't yell good enough to get it fixed for free, then there is the small fee option.

I walked into my room today and saw my PS2 laying on the ground, 3 feet below the desk it was supposed to be on...I think my mom knocked it off while cleaning my room. I tried to turn it on when I noticed the disk drive sticking out in an unusual way. I turned it on and it went to the browser screen and all that, but it said there was an error reading the disc. I can't even get the friggin game out anymore. Worst of all the playstion.com support site won't work for some reason, anyway this sucks real bad, but my mom is willing to pay for it since it's her fault...Anyway, anybody else who has had their PS2 fixed, how much does it cost and how long does it normally take? Just wondering.

Wait The Germanator. I sent my PS2 in 2 days ago. I hope it's free. This is how it goes if you want a repair or a new PS2 for free from Sony.
Do this...
1-800-345-7669
This is the number you need to call if you get DREs. Sony will fix it for free even without a warranty.
They will not fix it if you have installed a mod-chip. If you installed a one, just forget about getting this repair.
They will still fix it if you took the warranty sticker off. The warranty sticker isn’t actually important to this repair since it only voids the warranty when there is a warranty. Since most of the people taking advantage of this haven’t had a valid warranty in years it doesn’t much matter. But just to be safe, don’t mention anything about doing that or opening it up or anything when you talk to them. Also, if Sony repaired your PS2 in the past, but the DREs came back, don’t worry. They’ll still do this for free; they may even replace it with a new one. And don’t worry if you’re under 18 or anything, Sony doesn’t care what age you are. All that’s needed for this repair is a DRE infected PS2.
When you call up you need to talk to a real person. This is the Sony hotline, so there are a million recordings. Just listen for the option to talk to a Customer Service Representative and select that.
While talking to them, make sure you specifically mention that you’re getting Disc Read Errors. Those are the magic words; you won’t get very far without saying “Disc Read Error.” After this they will ask you some questions such as if you’ve used any devices such as a GameShark, answer no. They will also ask you if you’ve used a cleaning device on the game disc, the answer to this is also no. They ask a few more questions, but those are the two important ones.
Once you get the go-ahead for the free repair simply follow the instructions they give you. They’ll ask you if you want to write down the information or have them email it to you. I suggest having them email it to you since it’ll have the number that gets you the free repair already written at the top and it has all the blank spaces for you to fill in the necessary information so you won’t forget to put down anything.
The repair is free, but you will have to pay for shipping it to Sony. However, they pay for shipping on the way back. It can vary depending on what shipping company you choose, but with insurance it nearly always costs less than $10. Make sure you get insurance when shipping it, you wouldn’t want to lose your PS2 just so you can save a few dollars on shipping.
Once you’ve sent it off you can check on the status of your repair by calling up the number, going into the PlayStation 2 section, and then selecting the option that lets you check on your repair status. You enter in your phone number and it tells you when it’s assigned to a technician and after they finish the repair it tells you when it was shipped back to you.
The repair time is always very short. It always takes less than three weeks, and in most cases takes less than half that time. In my previous DRE topics people were reporting getting their PS2s back within a week, and a few people even got theirs back in only 2-3 days! Sony is really repairing these things fast!
This number also works in Canada, and you can get the free repair there as well. As for outside the U.S. and Canada, you'll need to call your own local Sony number to find out. The number will be located in your PS2 instructions in the warranty section. You can also find it on the package of any PlayStation accessory manufactured by Sony.
If you’re considering using an FAQ to try and fix the problem yourself, I might think twice about that. I mean, would you rather risk trying to repair it yourself (I’ve talked to many people who broke their PS2s with those FAQs), or would you rather have it professionally repaired by Sony completely free of charge in just a week or two? The Sony repair is so fast, free, and easy; there’s really no comparing the two.
I hope this helps and I hope I get my PS2 back soon.
