I have to admit that I've been wearing the wrong shirt these last days...
As for per suasion: a Griffin isn't even a monster! It usually lets people ride on its back. Leviathan just eats people. And boats. And whales. And Kraken (sorry Ric). And Griffin if they're stupid enough to get close to the seas.
