well said, well said.

Thanks guys, not quite sure what route to go yet. For the moment the 360 seems to be winning by an inch. I really do crave the ability to fluidly play online on one interconnected service. The HD aspect does kind of bug me, although is it possible that Microsoft will swallow their pride and release a blueray extension similar to their HD DVD one? If that is the case than I may indeed be sold on the 360. Hmmm, decisions decisions.

^^ It's pretty much not possible that they are gonna put on a 360 Blu-Ray drive, they're not taking that route. Microsoft wants to do all that Digital Distribution shit.

Microsoft certainly hasn't denied the possibility of an add-on Blu-ray player or one built into the Elite model. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's definitely not going to happen. Although Blu-ray has beat out HD-DVD, that still doesn't mean Blu-ray is going to become the next generation format. So it might be another foolish move on Microsoft's part if they did incorporate Bluray into the 360.

It has sold well enough to this point to guaruntee a pretty significant place in the market for several years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Blu-ray constitutes around 10-20% of total movie format (DVD & Blu-ray) sales to date? I don't view that as enough market share to guarantee stability for several years, and it's certainly not even close to the critical mass needed to elevate the Blu-ray format.

I'm not denying that somewhere down the road Blu-ray might reach mainstream success, I'm just saying that's not so right now.

You're way wrong. TO DATE? DVD was an incredibly successful format that has been mainstream for 10+ years, hasn't it? I'd guess Blu Ray sales might be around 1% of DVD sales to date.

If you look at the number of early adopters of the Blu Ray format, the percentage of people who have used their PS3's for Blu Rays, the number of million PS3's that will be in homes in 5 years, the consistent price drops of Blu Ray players, the number of more HDTVs that will be in homes in 5 years and want to make some predictions, I think you may look at it from the same angle I am. People were hesistant to say HD-DVD was dead until they literally stopped making them. Why wait that long? I'm not saying Blu Ray will reach DVD success, but at the same time it won't be discontinued anytime soon.

Way wrong. Way, way, way wrong. At the time HD DVD backed out, both formats combined got less than 1% of total movie sales. Blu-Ray would be lucky to have passed the 1% margin.

I quote directly from Sony CEO, Ryoji Chubachi:

"DVD and BD currently account for about 80 percent and 20 percent, respectively, of global demand for movie discs, Chubachi indicated. The new BD devices to be offered by Sony include models integrating an HD LCD TV with BD recording functionality, Chubachi pointed out."

Edit: I think you may have misinterpreted what I meant by "to date."

While what you're saying might eventually become true, it's currently not. Just because Blu-ray beat out HD-DVD does not mean it will become the dominant format. And as I said before, critical mass has certainly not been met. Speculatively, I see your point, but I was going more from current numbers.

Well I wasn't really talking current numbers. I was guarunteeing a significant market impact over the next handful of years. And while guarunteeing might be a strong word because I don't have a crystal ball, I like going out on a limb.

And I apologize for myself as well as gekko...it seems as though we mistook 'to date' as 'to date'.

Quoting Sony personnel on Blu Ray demand? Call me crazy, but that doesn't seem the smartest.

Get an Xbox 360.

That means I'll won't bump into your tomfoolery on my elitist PlayStation Network risen on the backs of lesser online services, and for free too.

And Blu-Ray, etc.

The PS3 comes with composite cables but you can buy component cables for it so it'll be in HD.
