I actually bought it having a greater interest in the non-gaming features. There's only a few games out for the PSP worth buying now. I decided to go with Wipeout Pure since it was an editor's choice. But my intent for buying the PSP revolves primarily around the extra features that I'm interested in using while at school and getting to and from school (via public transportation).
One might argue that buying a PSP primarily for the extra features is a poor choice but fortunately I'm still living at home and am in a position where the money I make can be spent freely without the worry of bills, etc...

Yeah, it all comes in one device, but I don't want to watch movies unless I'm actually going on some long trip where I expect to watch movies. Then I'll just carry a DVD player along. And I've never been so desperate for music that I would absolutely have to carry a PSP along with me for that purpose. And if I want to browse the internet and for some reason have no access to work, home or a computer store, I might as well just use my cell phone which also has a sucky browser but which I'm going to be carrying around with me at all times anyway.
The PSP's multimedia capabilities are nice bonuses. I won't deny that. But people don't buy the thing for those features. They buy it for the games. And if people are starting to say that the PSP is a better movie player than game player, Sony is going to have problems.

mm hmm...
and how many of the PSP's features have you used recently?

Re: DS price drop AKA psp doom3d
I thought I just told you. I watched a movie (ok, part of a movie) on the PSP and didn't care for it. I've listened to music on it and didn't care for it. I haven't actually browsed the internet with it, but I saw someone else doing it. And again I didn't care for it.
Do you want me to spell it out with dates and times or something?

Re: DS price drop AKA psp doom3d
I see Xantar's point, it's just said in a really agressive way that makes it sound worse than it should. Whenever people compare PSP and DS and GBA, they are quick to point out all the features of the PSP, which they instantly feel make it a far superior machine. Really, the whole "extra features" of the PSP seem really thrown together and poorly done from what I've seen. The lack of video format support, the small memory size (i realize it's upgradable, but by the time you purchase a large memory stick, an MP3 player really isn't that much more expensive).
The best extra feature that the PSP has, really, is emulation, which is illegal and wasn't even done by Sony. I do applaud them on trying to incorporate a lot of features into it, and it was a great idea, and they pulled it off pretty well, it's just the fact is, I don't want an MP3 player that is as big as the PSP. I want it to be small. I don't want it to have a screen I'm worried about damaging. If my DS had MP3 support, guess what... I'd still use my iPod. I realize that it's a great alternative for those without fancy gadgets, but it still doesn't make it useful in my eyes.
Again, I still see the PSP and DS as playing on an equal playing field, as equally great systems, so don't give me the bias/fanboy bull**** that I know is gonna come out.

Re: DS price drop AKA psp doom3d
Thats one of the only main reasons I was considering a PSP was for the emulation factor. I'm not as hyped for the PSP games, just the fact I can play the old games on it

his point is valid, aside from game, no 1 feature of the psp stands out as a reason to get it, need a video player, theres better ones, need a music player, theres better ones. need a portable internet.... well most are the same there. touch screen for that is nice tho.
its not as he said 'each feature sucks' thats totally differnet.
thing is tho, PSP isnt mean to be any 1 of thoes features, its appeal is in that it can do all of them.
i have a ipod with a LOT of cd's worth of my music on it. infact every cd i own is on my ipod. and i wouldnt trade my ipod for anything (except a newer ipod) However, i keep a handfull of some of my favorite songs on my PSP (1gig memory stick was under$90 when i got it) and if i go somewhere, and i dont really want to bring a whole bunch of crap, if i bring my PSP, i have some of my favorite music, i have my games, i have my videos (right now im putting all my favorite seinfeld episodes on it) and all that. its the point of having it all in 1 that makes it convienent.
i dont want to carry around a GBA, portable DVD player, Ipod, pocket PC.....i could just take the PSP.
i'd kinda apply the saying, 'jack of all trades, master of none' however i think it masters games just fine. but the saying is close enough.

Yeah, Null, you make a good point, and that is what the PSP does best.

Re: DS price drop AKA psp doom3d
official news about price drop
Quote:
Nintendo Co. is getting more aggressive in the portable video game market, announcing a $20 price cut Tuesday for its newest handheld system.
The Nintendo DS is being reduced to $130 from $150. The cut is effective Sunday, a day before the release of the anticipated title "Nintendogs," an interactive puppy simulator that lets owners train and play with a virtual pet. The dogs respond to owners through the built-in microphone and react to praise via the handheld's touch screen.
The dual-screen handheld device made its way to retail stores in November and has sold more than 2.5 million units in North America and 5 million worldwide.
But Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news).'s PlayStation Portable, which retails for $250, stole the limelight in March with its all-in-one entertainment system that lets players watch movies, listen to music, play games and view photos. Sony has sold almost 2 million units in North America and shipped more than 5 million worldwide.
According to market research firm DFC Intelligence, the worldwide portable game market is expected to grow from $4 billion in 2004 to $11.1 billion by 2007. Nintendo is credited for creating the market in 1989 with its Game Boy series.
This fall, Nintendo plans to let DS players challenge each other via Wi-Fi — a feature already on the PlayStation Portable

Re: DS price drop AKA psp doom3d
Now if only they would drastically lower the price of the GBA SP since people will go "Why not spend $30 more for a handheld that looks alot better, plays existing (at least GBA) games (sans multiplayer)
