What about Grand Theft Auto? And Zelda... Although I personally like LttP (which is of course 2D) the best, lots of people seem to prefer OoT (3D)...
there are probably more series that started in 2D that moved to 3D that people think is at least just as good as the 2D (when it comes to a fun gaming experience)... Metroid might be one...
Anyways... I think a big thing is to try not to compare the two... I enjoyed the N64 castlevania games... *shrugs*... Was it as good as SotN? Of course not
But still...
