I'm not sure why Nintendo licensed the Mario world out to make the Mario Numbers and kids games and Mario is Missing. I know the Phillips CD-i junk (Hotel Mario, and the 2 Zelda FMV games) were part of an appeasment deal when Nintendo pulled the plug on the Super CD project with Phillips- which came after Sony and the Playstation dealie.

Mario Paint was in-house and if you actually used the mouse and played around with the program a bit you could do some weird cool stuff. Not that I remember... never owned it.

With the license they would've made a big fist load of money on it no matter how crappy it was: the company (think it was Mindscape) had to pay a license to make a game for SNES then hand over added royalties due to sales: Making Nintendo more money.

And for the record, I remember the live action Mario show. It was the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. They did 2 more cartoons after that: Mario 3 and Mario World. None of the 3 were anygood except for the Super Show which had wrestler Captain Lou Albano as Mario.... apparently an anime based on the original Super Mario was released in Japan in 1985 to coincide with the game's release. No idea what it was like....

Going by total sales and disregarding Game Boy the NES is still Nintendo's most successful system. Show the SNES did, admittedly, kick much ass.
