Default Doom III for XBox

Id Software had previously expressed interest in doing an Xbox version of its upcoming first-person shooter, but hadn't confirmed that there would be a console version of the game. Today during his keynote at QuakeCon, id's John Carmack said that the Xbox is the only console platform that id is "completely committed" to releasing Doom III on. Carmack further commented that the Xbox version will have the "full graphics fidelity" of the PC version, which made a major debut at this year's E3, where it won a number of awards.
Id Software has said that work on the Xbox version won't start until the PC game is complete. At QuakeCon 2002, id expressed hope that the game would be done before next year's E3 in May.

Hmmm...sounds good for the XBox'ers. But I wonder why they said that the XBox is the only console platform that they are completely commited to But I guess, good news for others.

I think it all comes down the the fact they code just for the PC (all the Console version of there games have been done by others) which is not too unlike the Xbox Infact alot of PC only devs are now making Consoles games cuss of Xbox.

Oh yea and the fact Xbox is about the only console that could do the PC version of Doom 3, looks like that 64MB of ram and a Hard drive were a good move after all.

Xbox is the only system capable of handling it. Xbox has the RAM, video card, and processing power to be able to pull it off. The PC world made a huge leap with the introduction of the GF3, and that's something that GC and PS2 don't have. They lack the programmability and power of the GF3.

The 64MB RAM was a huge thing for Xbox. The reason GC gets ****ty ports and Xbox gets good ports is solely because the developers have a lot of extra RAM to work with so they can easily improve the graphics. GC can produce graphics as good as Xbox, problem is you need to write the game from scratch to run on Gamecube.

Xbox has the most power, and is familiar in the PC world. John Carmack is on the Xbox board too, I believe. Anyway, it's easier for him to work with a P3, GF3, 64MB RAM, and a HD than it would be to tackle Ps2 or something. Doom 3 was shown with the revealing of the GeForce 3 (on Mac, BTW), and it was the first game to use the programmability of the GF3. GC doesn't have that.

And don't think Xbox is that powerful either. This game will be running at 640x480 on Xbox, default PC settings (medium detail, some stuff off), and probably won't pass 30fps. On PC, this game will be running at 1280x1024, 4x FSAA, and 60fps, max detail, all effects on. That giant drop in resolution is what allows the weak little Xbox to handle the game. It's amazing how underpowered consoles are.

But for the people who are too cheap to have a new top-of-the-line PC, it's a good deal.

Is this game online? If so, I will probably get it when I get my Xbox next year.

I thought Doom 3 was based around the new ATI chip.

If it supports HDTV 1080dpi, like newer games are start to support, it maymay look about as good as the PC version. But I agree.

On top of 64MB, I might add, its unified RAM, which means a lot more flexability then GC and PS2 hardware. But that probably won't play much of a role in something like DOOM III.

Gamecube doesn't get ****ty ports just because it doesn't have as much RAM. They get ****ty ports because a lot of developers are lazy ****ers. Especially the guys at EA, parasites that live on EA, and Acclaim.

I just realized something.... this is the first time I've read a post by Brian that's praising an Xbox. Weird....

Nope. It began development on the GF3. It was first revealed on a Mac. Just thought I should point that out.

Then it was just shown at E3 running on the ATI R300 (Radeon 9700). That only could handle it at medium detail. Same as Xbox, only Xbox will run it at a lower resolution, so it can handle it.

As for the 1080i, I doubt it's gonna become the standard for games this generation. As great as it is, it takes up extra system resources to run at that resolution. Although the resolution makes games look great, it'll be taken away from what they can do with the rest of the graphics. I honestly doubt that Xbox could pull off Doom III at 1080i, but I'm not a programmer.

And I have good things to say about Xbox, I just usually talk about the bad things. Xbox is getting better, I can say that. MS makes stupid mistakes while making great decisions. All around they should end this generation strong. Xbox 2 will flop however, unless I'm in charge Could you imagine? Powered by a modified PowerPC G5 and running a stripped down version of Mac OS X. Hehehehehe.

I think he was stating the obvious . Which I think is a compliment in a way .

Although I could get the game for the Xbox, I might just buy it on the PC, though it depends on the differences between the two versions. If this doesn't support the keyboard and mouse on the Xbox, then I may just have to go with the PC version.

Anyone know which new graphics cards will be available by the time this is released?

Well ATI is releasing the Radeon 9700 soon. Best card to date.

At QuakeCon they were able to run it on at 800x600, high detail on a 2.2ghz P4 and 9700. Game must be a little more optimized, cause the R300 (same card, early name) could only handle 640x480 on medium detail.

The NV30, nVidia's new card, would call it the GeForce5, but it's leaving the GeForce series. Anyway, that's gonna come out before Doom. I think later this fall.

Matrox also has a card coming out.

Anyway, these cards are the first to support Direct X 9, and if Doom 3 uses any DX9 features, the graphics will be even better on PC, cause you miss out on that stuff for Xbox.

Anyway, if your PC can handle it, I wouldn't get it on Xbox. And I'm also waiting to upgrade to the best graphics card before it is released. But it won't be out until next summer, so who knows.

I might just get the 9700 or NV30 so I can enjoy better graphics on my current games. I don't even know if I'll be around for Doom 3's release.

Marines, and yes. I could be gone as early as June. Pointless for me to buy a new card and not use it much.
