If online isn't actually a requirement, then there would be no way to enforce fees on used games. This may just be word play on Sony's part though.

There is a very real possibility they'll have monthy subscription fees for online gaming, unfortunately that panned out very well for Microsoft. But there's still hope that it won't be required.

As for what I call 'Big Brother' technology (aka Kinnect).. something in your livingroom always watching and listening to you... I hope Sony stays far away from that.

Online isn't required for Xbox either.. you just need to check-in at times.. Sony can have a similar system.

Like if you sign onto PSN, it checks to make sure legit version of the game!

Anyhow, if you want to hear more of my thoughts, should check out this week's podcast. Nearly 2 hours of Xbox One talk

Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.
Actually it does require a connection, it just doesn't have to be always on. The assumption is that when you put a new game in, you'll be required to authenicate it online. After that is done, you'll no longer need to be connected. (which is how they could easilly enforce the fees on used games)

That's not to say Sony won't require it either, like I said before it could just be very clever word play on their part. But as it stands right now, it's confirmed the internet is required on the Xbox One.. and Sony is saying very long winded "no"s that don't close the door to the possibility that it's the same as Xbox One.

IGNs chart still lists the online requirement for Ps4 to No, and Xbox One to yes.

http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/PS...mparison_Chart

-EDIT-

Someone needs to ask both companies directly at E3 this question "If a customer brings home a new Ps4/XOne game, can they just put it in their system and play it without being connected to the internet? Or will the system require you to connect before allowing gameplay?"
