It probably should have been on the list. Microtransactions and that style of game had been done before it, but never to such a degree and so successfully. Farmville paved the way for a free-to-play, microtransaction based games.
Before that if someone had an idea for a game that was going to be expensive to make and free to play, most investors would probably have laughed at them.
Now the industry is being flooded by games pursuing that business model. Will it become over saturated? Probably, but that level of competition is awesome for customers.
There have already been some stellar hits in the F2P area. League of Legends and Tribes: Ascend. Mechwarrior Online is also going that route.
