Clothier selling skimpy skivvies for girls 10 and older

Calling it the "modern-day version of Underoos," a national clothing company is selling thong underwear in children's sizes - with the words "eye candy" and "wink wink" printed on the front.

Abercrombie & Fitch

The rearless underwear comes in sizes for girls ages 10 to 16. The smallest size - a medium - appears small enough to fit an even younger girl.

Abercrombie & Fitch, the same retailer that enraged parents last year with a summer catalog of teenage-looking models groping each other and in the nude, now offers several varieties of thongs at its Abercrombie stores, the division of the company for children 7 to 14 years old.

"It's cute and fun and sweet," said Hampton Carney, spokesman for the company based in New Albany, Ohio.

But some parents are far from tickled. In fact, they're outraged.

"I think of myself as fairly hip, and I think it's just disgusting," said Julie McNamara, a 40-year-old mother from Whitefish Bay.

The thongs, part of Abercrombie's summer line, sell for $7.50, or 3 for $15. Some have stripes, others are solid pink or blue. The solid-colored thongs have the words "eye candy" printed in a little pink heart and "wink wink" in a small green box.

The rearless underwear comes in sizes for girls ages 10 to 16. The smallest size - a medium - appears small enough to fit an even younger girl.

McNamara said she was livid when she stumbled upon the thongs while shopping for her three children at Bayshore Mall. She grabbed a pair and confronted a clerk at the register.

"I said, 'Will you tell me what this is?' They said, 'I know, I know, you're the fourth one today,' " McNamara said.

The flap over the thongs is not the first time that Abercrombie & Fitch has caused controversy for its edgy themes and designs.

Last year, the company caught ire from parents over its quarterly catalog, which was filled with models who appeared to be college age or younger in the nude, kissing and fondling each other.

The company defended its publication, calling it a celebration of a youthful and spirited yet responsible lifestyle.

Quotable

It's cute and fun and sweet.

- Hampton Carney,
spokesman for the Abercrombie & Fitch

It's Frederick's of Hollywood for preteens and teenagers.

- Lisa Maxwell,
parent

It's not appropriate for a 7-year-old, but it is appropriate for a 10-year-old. Once you get about 10, you start to care about your underwear, and you start to care about your
clothes.

company spokesman

That is disturbing. Thongs should be only sold to the beautiful and the developed.

Yes, a thong can be a (very, very) beautiful thing if worn by the right girl. But then with the wrong girl wearing it......

A ton of girls wear thongs by age 16. But then again, a good majority of girls who look half-way decent are also sexually active by age 16.

I heard they were marketed towards girls 10-14. Either way, I really don't give a damn. If they're a slut at age 12, let em have it. Parent's don't have to buy them.

I can't figure out what 7 or ten eyar old would want to wear a thong!!! I mean, when I was seven all I wanted to wear were briefs, jeans, and a tee-shirt... I mean now I'd wear one if the circomstance arose... but what young kid would want one?!!?
And What perverted adult would think to make them?
That's disgusting!!

Hey. I'm Catholic and frankly, I'm sick and tired of everyone generalizing our priests, people we look up to, to all be molesters. That was a very small minority of the large majority of very good priests. These jokes are not funny and are quite disturbing to those of us that truly know the people you are refering to in you statement(Catholic priests in general.) I know it's just a joke but ragardless, it is a joke that harms the image of people I respect, trust, and love. Please stop.

What? You mean you don't believe the article? This isn't the only report of it, it's been all over the news. I don't know what reason you would have to not believe it. Besides, all you would have to do is go to the abercrombie website to see them.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. I despise abercrombie and all they stand for. They embody all that is wrong with popular culture today. All they have to do to make something popular is put their name on it since they have got everyone thinking that the only way to be cool is to wear their stuff. Well I for one won't buy from the M$ of the clothing world. Overpriced clothes that fall apart quicker than that shirt you picked up for free at the local carnival. No thank you.

EDIT: General Forum's 12,222nd post.

Wow. A & F is into a lot of offensive stuff these days. Just a week ago, there was a huge outcry in a lot of colleges about these T-shirts the company had produced. They had these stereotypical Asian pictures (you know, people with slits for eyes, short and stubby, wearing cone-shaped straw hats) and some captions like "Wok on!" or something like that.

Personally, I didn't find it offensive (and I'm Asian), but some people who actually came from Asia were miffed. I did agree that the shirts were kind of tasteless. I don't know anybody who would want to buy an overpriced T-shirt just because it's brown with a picture of a stereotypical Asian on it and a lame pun for a caption.

We ought to get some newspaper to do an exposé.

I'm sure A & F employs people in sweatshops, too.

Woaha, I wouldn't belete nWoChrisnWo's posts, he might explode in anger.

Oh yeah, it's marketing, as long as it sells I wouldn't see who else would give a rat's ass. I mean before modern days people ran around naked. So as much as times have changed times have stayed the same eh?
