This is a bit of an iffy question.

From a business standpoint, having the classic control be a viable option would not have helped the system early on or even in the long run. As games like Smash Bros prove, when given a choice between a controller and Wii-mote, most would choose the controller because they know how it works.

On the same hand, there are games that wouldn't have worked as well with a classic controller.

Now as for the rest, I don't own a classic controller, any game that uses it or something like it, I use the Cube controller for so I don't need the hassle of finding a wii-mote or something. So won't comment on that.

So I guess in short, Wii-mote as standard= good. Not having classic controller as a viable option= good from a business point of view.

The controller is one of the main reasons I don't play my Wii, along with online gaming, and having technology sub-par to the original Xbox.

I think there's a reason "gamepads" are the default controller for game systems. They work for the largest percentage of titles out there. Light guns, fishing rods, steering wheels, dance pads, musical instruments, and giant mech cockpits work great in a very small and highly specialized set of games. Motion controls also work really well, for a very small set of games. But I've come to understand that I'm not Nintendo's target audience.

I also don't like that there's no wired Wii remote. Wired controllers make development so much nicer.

Different strokes for different folks. I hate the wired 360's controller. Wire everywhere. Bleh.

My dualshock 3 is constantly de-wired. If it wasn't, I would be going crosseyed from looking at my TV so closely.

I can see how the Wii batteries would become a pain. But the cord would have to be longer than PS3's and way shorter than 360's.

I didn't say I liked wired controllers, I said I don't like Wii not having one. I generally prefer playing games in my living room with a wireless controller, and definitely think they should be the default offering. What bothers me is when companies do not offer the wired version in any form. I don't care if I need to go through a mail order catalog to get one, there are times when wireless doesn't cut it.

The reason it's on my mind is because syncing a wii remote with the dev kit is a painful process and could be avoided with a wired controller. I also shouldn't need to worry about battery life when I sit within arms reach from the box, which runs non-stop while working. It just makes working so much easier.

It's not the only place where wireless fails. I've seen several cases at PAX where having hundreds of wireless devices causes problems. Once again, we're right next to the machine, why are we not using wired devices? Also, anyone who plays games competitively would not want to risk wireless screwing up during a tournament. I'm sure I could come up with other reasons.

As I said, I like wireless devices, but there's a few scenarios where I prefer wired. My problem with Wii is I can't get a wired remote. So since we were expressing our dislike for the Wii remote, I figured I'd bring up the lack of a wired version.

Yup that's why I think Nintendo should have released something different for the classic pro. I mean if people can use their gamecube controllers which are probably a lot cheaper now, then bringing something fresh for the wii could probably attract more people.

Oh and about what Dyne said, I think that the wiimotes could really improve if they manage to make their controller battery-less. "Think PS3 controllers" very light, great battery life, and you can charge it anywhere with a usb plug like a computer. Also if you ever where in the middle of the game and your "wireless wii-mote" went dead, you'd be able to plug it in and play. I agree the cables should be not too long or not too short, perfect distance. Think "USB Wired Gaming Mouse"

This is an odd point.
If we accept gamepads as the end all/be all of console gaming, we may never find the next best thing.

I'm not saying it is motion controls, I'm not saying controllers aren't needed, but I don't necessarily feel that there isn't something better out there.

And the only way to be sure, is to find something that works better.
