PS3 Decision Help
This isn't in the gaming forum because this will get more feedback. Not the end of the world.
Anyways, my PS3 has been broken for a long, long time. The motor doesn't work, and it's not under warranty anymore, and it will cost me 180 to get it fixed.
Phil (Dyne, for you internetters) told me his friend is trying to offload his PS3 and a few games for 250.
Now, I just (finally) did my taxes, and I will be getting 700+ back due to the fact I worked only 3 months last year due to injury.
So what my dilemma is, is do I fix the PS3 I have for 180 and wait a month for it to be fixed, buy a brand spankin' new one altogether, or buy Phil's friends system. The one thing I have against buying it from Phil's friend, is first off, I'm very weary of people who give me a seemingly good deal, and 250 for PS3 +multiple games isn't bad - but the other thing I have against it, is if that system breaks, I will be in the same boat I'm in now, just with one more non-working system.
The thing I have against getting a brand new system, is what the hell do I do with the other one. I'll feel very ripped off, in a sense.
So, fellow GT-ers, I come to you. Make my mind up for me.

Re: PS3 Decision Help
That's a hard one. If you have other things to hold you over, I'd probably repair the old one. (Especially if it has the backwards compatibility)

Re: PS3 Decision Help
The compatibility thing is a big issue for some but maybe not for most and if things hold true, you'll be able to play your PS2 games soon enough anyway.
PSX games have always been there even after backwards compatibility was removed so if that's more your thing then you should have no problem from the get-go.
Your purchases are linked to your account so they transfer with a new console, and you get a smaller, somewhat nicer look and probably less power consumption too.
But that's my opinion.

It hasn't been working in about 9 or 10 months. I don't even know for sure, it's been so long. To tide my gaming over I've just been re-playing PS2 games, and the occasional Wii game.
And it's not backwards compatable, it's the cheap version. 40 gig.
Looking into it, a 120 gig from Future Shop is 300 bucks brand new.

Where's the "get an xbox 360 instead" option?

How would that help me get a PS3.
Plus I despise the fact I would not only have to pay for the system, and my own internet connection, and the games I plan on playing, but XBL on top of that.
I'll take my free online gaming, battery-less controllers and blu-ray player any day.
PS. Canucks opener tomorrow. You around?

Re: PS3 Decision Help
I'd get a new PS3 with a warranty and try to fix your old one. I'm sure if you google "fix PS3" you can find something. If you fix it you can put it up on ebay or something.
Fixing a motor in a PS3? You can do that. Just pop it open, get a soldering iron, and go to town. You can do it!

The problem is the motor, and the only way to really fix it is to ship it to a place, and pay 190 for it.

Re: PS3 Decision Help
Get a new one. Think of it as paying $110 more for the peace of mind of an extended warranty.
And that would leave you open to KG's idea. You can't break something that's already broken, so there's no harm in opening it up and trying to fix it.

Re: PS3 Decision Help
Too bad you have an older model or you could do the evil thing... buy a new console.. like a week later have it "break" on you and return your old one.. either for cash or get a new one, which you can then sell.

Re: PS3 Decision Help
First he claimed it was 180 to send in to be fixed, now he claims it to be 190. Which one is it Typh, better get your story straight.
But I agree with the "get a 360" option instead.
No it wouldn't help you get a PS3, and that's the glory of it.
And contrary to popular belief, the 360 does in fact, have corded controllers that dont require batteries.

Re: PS3 Decision Help
Get a 360 and never look back.
But if you won't do that, get a new slim. If you pay $180 to fix the one you have, it will probably break again in a different way soon.

Re: PS3 Decision Help
Yeah I wouldn't want to get stuck with a fixed old PS3. Better get a Slim with warranty.
You can use the old PS3 for weight-lifting. Oh, can you try if that thing will roll when you give it a good push? It might have the shape for it.
Also, trying to fix it sounds good.

Re: PS3 Decision Help
Yeah, I'm going to just buy a new one.
Has anyone heard anything about the slims? In the sense of them not working properly or anything?
Basically, should I get a slim or an old model? Because getting a slim seems to make a lot more sense, however if they're screwing up off the line, then I don't really want to waste my time.
