For a melee weapon you're going to wont something durable, something that you'll be able to use over and over and not have it break as so many melee weapons probably will in short time. Perhaps the best option here is the Machete which are very durable and pretty light as they are made to chop some shit the fuck down, even if it's some fucking zombies. Even then I would grab two of them because they will eventually break.
To be honest I would immediately gather supplies and weapons and leave for where I grew up. Head for the cabin back in the woods and start a fucking garden I suppose. Living like a pilgrim until the day I feel safe enough to venture into the city again. Probably about 2 or 3 years time should suffice for any viral outbreaks to pass and those infected to have killed each other or died of the disease or whatever. Although the first sign of trouble I would GTFO.
Rifle: Slung over shoulder.
Magnum: Holster around waist; right hand side.
10 Gauge: In hand.
Machete: In sheath; left hand side.
Polearm: Slung over shoulder.
Brick hammer: Front-left hand side.
(all that really doesnt weigh that much, aside from the brick hammer, which isnt that necessary)
And an SMG doesnt have that much stopping power, and where are you going to store all the clips!? Sure you can riddle them full of bullets, but that isnt going to put them down in one shot.
I agree with gathering supplies, but heading back for a cabin in the middle of the woods? You would be surrounded by forest, who knows where the zombies would come from. And also, 2-3years!? I would go back within the first few months while the supplies are still fresh. You would just need need to set up a good base of operations and good transportation to get back in the city, otherwise you are screwed.
I don't think any automatic weapons would be desirable in a zombie outbreak. Even the ultra-light weight and accurate at close range M16 requires tons of maintenance and is difficult to fire accurately with limited training or when moving. You could downgrade to a smaller machine gun, but those are incredibly inaccurate unless you are at very close ranges. I doubt you would have to worry about the delivery not being powerful enough, I doubt you need much force to penetrate a zombie skull.
I don't know if I would go for a revolver either. I know the payload is huge but it doesn't have many rounds and I bet it requires a decent amount of maintenance. Plus it might not handle well with varying weather conditions. I'd try to find a low-maintenance pistol with a huge magazine.
Or my personal favorite, automatic shotgun with optional explosive rounds:

Fine, I'm not trying to say I'm a master of headshots or anything? Even with a gun that isn't very accurate. Zombie heads will roll.
A cabin would be pretty ideal. More than likely zombies without some form of intelligence or travel aren't going to make it out to the woods where few people live. If I made it there I would only have to worry about the possibility of my parents and my aunt being zombies and that's just 3 zombies. And yes I would kill the shit out of my zombie family. Even if they weren't zombies... Maybe they still die? Who knows? Anyway... The only way I'm risking going back to zombie land is if I absolutely have to. Depends on the season. If I can plant a garden then I wouldn't need to get back to zombie land for a long time.

Re: Zombie contingency plan.
So was walking down the street today when I happened to see a random pink propane tank on the floor. Of course, to me it only signals that people are preparing for the upcoming zombie invasion so I text Swan to tell him it has begun.... he texts back asking if drunk.
Anyhow, while walking I was also thinking what are places you should AVOID in case of a zombie breakout. And the first place that came to mind was the hospital with all those sick and dead people, you pretty much have an outbreak waiting to happen. It usually isn't too secure and the food is awful.
You probably want to avoid malls and skyscrapers too. I've thought about the potential if you could successfully get one locked down, but it would be incredibly difficult.
Torching an invested skyscraper would be epic though. Text message me when you're going to do that.
A military camp could be a good place to hang out when they're still clean. But a terrible place if they're infected. Think of all those muscled men, who might even remember how to throw grenades and stuff.
Of course they probably won't let you as a survivor in either, just to be sure.
