Batman doesn't fight for an abstract concept, his motivations are personal, and to remove Wayne from the picture is to utterly create a different character,a nd not simply change an existing one.

They might call him Batman, but he'll just be someone else pretending to be him until Wayne steps back into the role.

I think that's the point.

No one can ever fill the shoes left by Bruce, but on the same hand would anyone want to?

I mean over time he became more jaded and isolated. Though, I think Batman Beyond proved.. at least to me that someone else can fill in the void of Batman because it isn't just about the costume, but the man inside of it.
