Terminator 1 is almost as good as 2!! It's a bit underrated (or 2 is overrated).
Just watch T1 and 2. Forget about T3, it sucked. And it takes places after TSCC (actually the series is an alternative take on the time between T2 and T3).

Well, if you REALLY want to understand the story of the Sarah Connor Chronicles, you should watch the movies - you don't need to, but it would probably help a lot with some understanding, I'd assume.
