There is a place for comeback AI, especially when playing Mario Kart with friends. I honestly believe that is why Mario Kart 64 is so universally loved by pretty much everyone, men, women, kids, adults, you name it, they like it. Its still amazingly fun to go back and play a 4 player round of Mario Kart.

Mario Kart goes both ways. The opposing AI is better if you're in first. But if you crash repeatedly, the karts ahead of you actually stop racing. The dots still slowly move around the track, but that's not where the karts really are. It's designed so no matter how poorly you perform, you can turn around and be passing another kart within N seconds.

Also, it's programmed into a game that when a person is so-close to finishing a race, the blue shell will appear. So getting hit when you're about to cross the finish line isn't unlucky, it's part of the design

I'm such a pimp at 4-player Mario Kart 64. But, even to this day, I will occasionally lose to the computer on Lap 3 right before the finish line because I am a victim of a shell or banana and the AI is right behind me or right in front of me. I don't see the computer power sliding to victory!!! Oh well, it keeps the game interesting. Give props to the design team.
