Re: Merry Christmas! / mad loots thread
Mas Effect and Halo 3.
I popped them in my machine to only have my 360 say it needs an update before it can play them... so now I have to go hook it up to my modem. Not an issue as its only making me do what I should have done from the beginning, but I was a bit suprised to see that updates were necessary to play these games.
Question: How the fuck are you going to play these games if you can't get broadband where you live?

Re: Merry Christmas! / mad loots thread
Er... if you aren't connected to the internet your 360 shouldn't know that you need the update. Or were you not referring to yourself?

They're not supposed to. The OS is designed to be put on the disc so there is never compatibility issues.

Re: Merry Christmas! / mad loots thread
Everything I can think of having received for Christmas:
No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
The Road by the same
$150 cash
$75 in check
$20 in giftcard
Lego Star Wars for the Wii
Annual Tiger Calendar
Dr. Pepper
Brain Age 2 for the DS
Lottery tickets (I lost)
Nasty Dr. Pepper flavored candy (it was flat...no, really, it tasted flat)
Some M&Ms and Snickers
IOUs (one was disguised as a photo of my girlfriend [Smile] )
Met my half-a-week old half-brother
Cherry Cheesecake (mom made it for work potluck)
Easy day at work despite it being the busiest day ever (yay, movies!)
Um, I think that's all.

Sweet loots, guys.
Here's what I remember:
Sake set and tons of Sake from my girlfriend. <3
$150 from all grandparents
Random stuff like socks from both grandparents as well.
$10 Tim Horton's gift card from my aunt
Free movie gift cards / coupons from my dad's girlfriend to me and my girlfriend (We'll be using these a lot)
From my parents/santa:
Mass Effect (so amazing!)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (also very amazing in DTS 5.1)
Cars on Blu-ray (ACTUALLY amazing.)
Superbad on Blu-ray (yet to watch)
Casino Royale on Blu-ray (yet to watch in high def)
Tons of candy (so much for that sugar diet..)

Re: Merry Christmas! / mad loots thread
Really good haul this year, but I also spent a lot more than I ever have on any other Christmas.
From Friends:
Bunch of t-shirts I missed from shirt.woot.com.
Big box of Cuban Cigars (funny, because they're expensive and I don't smoke).
Beautiful Katamari for Xbox 360.
Random gift cards to various retailers/gas stations.
From Family:
A new chronometer.
Garmin GPS for my car (works awesome - totally in love with my new toy).
A Samsung 226BW monitor (God this is gorgeous - playing Orange box on this is great).
Bunch of swanky ties/dress shirts.
More random gift cards.

Still, it seems pretty illogical to make such a large population of gamers unable to play your best games...
But hey, we're talking about the same company that puts out an operating system that takes up all your resources... God forbid you want Office 2007 too...

I just got a 360 a little while ago and own both of those games. I get a lot of notices like this too, but I'm pretty sure they said "if you choose not to update, you will not be able to connect to Xbox Live" or something to that effect. I know I definitely didn't set up Xbox Live before first playing Halo 3.

Re: Merry Christmas! / mad loots thread
The mandatory dashboard update comes with games, the optional title updates must be downloaded from Live, but they're optional.

Re: Merry Christmas! / mad loots thread
Everyone is saying these things are optional, but reading the message, I was left with no options that I could see. I'll check again tonight.
