I still don't get the need for the alternate names and the whole back story if it's never revealed who everyone is.

The narration is just to set a mood and is a more intereting way of explaining how things unfold.

Plus some of the characters are tied to abilities. It's just for fun. And the roles are revealed when the person dies.

It's just more interesting than:

Today's Deaths:

Joey joe joe - vigilante
marioX - normal
etc.
